Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
A noble, complex nose of flowers, beef blood, black currants, licorice, and truffles reveals surprising evolution. The full-bodied, powerful wine exhibits stunning concentration, beautiful richness, sweet tannin, and a long finish. A blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon (all from a bio-dynamically farmed vineyard), the 2004 Pavie-Macquin is another dazzling success from the brilliant winemaking team of Stephane Derenoncourt and Nicolas Thienpont.

Wine & Spirits
Deep red. Refined aromas of ripe red cherry and strawberry jam complicated by notes of rosemary, marjoram and cocoa. Suave, rich and dense, with savory red cherry, licorice and herb flavors showing lovely balance and surprising flesh for the vintage. Finishes long and rich, with mouthcoating, polished tannins. A major success in 2004; perhaps just a touch lean at the back. The estate opted for full maturity of the grapes and risked picking in between the fall rains. For example, the cabernets were picked extremely late, between October 18 and 28. Very well done.

Wine Spectator
Aromas of crushed blackberry and cherry follow through to a full body, with velvety tannins, a lovely core of ripe fruit and a long, caressing finish. Best after 2011.

Decanter
Sumptuous plumcake, toast, chocolate and high-toned fragrance. This is coming around - really delicious sweet, sappy fruit, with plenty of depth and softness.

Wine
This research and this contemplation of a viticulture and vinification based on respect for natural law and a dynamic tradition have made Pavie Macquin a virtual laboratory. It is not a question of creating a new wine but simply of revealing the terroir and unveiling the qualities that were hitherto hidden. In one phrase, it meant revealing the hidden beauty of this ‘Cinderella’.
On the occasion of the reclassification of the Saint Emilion chateaux (in September 2006), Chateau Pavie Macquin was promoted to the prestigious level of Premier Grand Cru Classé.
