Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

This classic Fumé Blanc has inviting aromas of green tea, lemongrass, and subtle, yet intriguing, ginger and tamarind spice notes. The nose leads to an expressive palate with sweet fruit flavors of apple, kiwi and pear. The wine has a rich, full mouthfeel and is well-balanced with refreshing acidity and a long finish.

From my tasting journals, the Chateau St Jean La Petite Etoile Vineyard Fumé Blanc stands as one of the most important Sauvignon Blancs in the new world and gives the best from the old world a run for their money. The 2013 exhibits finely-tuned dried grass and savory herbs as a backdrop to its excellent stone fruit and mineral notes. The wine would be a superb match with fresh goat cheese, grilled peaches and lightly grilled chicken. Drinking well now. (Tasted: May 9, 2016, San Francisco, CA)

Intense honeysuckle and orange blossom, with a touch of smoke, swirl around a core of ripe, juicy peach, pear and citrus flavors. Elegant and refreshing. Drink now.

Founded in 1973 in the Sonoma Valley, Chateau St. Jean is the quintessential Sonoma winery. Chateau St. Jean produces an extensive portfolio of Sonoma County wines as well as vineyard designated wines, limited production Reserve wines, and the flagship Cinq Cépages Cabernet Sauvignon. Winemaker Margo Van Staaveren uses her more than 30 years of vineyard and winemaking expertise with Chateau St. Jean to continue the tradition of highlighting the best of each vineyard site to produce exceptional wines. Chateau St. Jean was the first Sonoma winery to be awarded the prestigious “Wine of the Year” award from Wine Spectator Magazine for its 1996 Cinq Cépages, a Bordeaux style blend of “five varieties” and has long been recognized as a leader in vineyard designated wines.

Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.

A standout region for its decidedly Californian take on Burgundian varieties, the Russian River Valley is named for the eponymous river that flows through it. While there are warm pockets of the AVA, it is mostly a cool-climate growing region thanks to breezes and fog from the nearby Pacific Ocean.

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir reign supreme in Russian River, with the best examples demonstrating a unique combination of richness and restraint. The cool weather makes Russian River an ideal AVA for sparkling wine production, utilizing the aforementioned varieties. Zinfandel also performs exceptionally well here. Within the Russian River Valley lie the smaller appellations of Chalk Hill and Green Valley. The former, farther from the ocean, is relatively warm, with a focus on red and white Bordeaux varieties. The latter is the coolest, foggiest parcel of the Russian River Valley and is responsible for outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
