Winemaker Notes

Tall, dark and handsome, our Clarendon Hills Moritz Syrah presents itself in a seductive and brooding bouquet with notes of earth, spice and blueberry that intertwine with roasted meats and cocoa. The palate is balanced and intense with flavors of chocolate and dark fruit. The super-tight extract offers a journey of textures juxtaposed within savory complexities, leading to a blueberry and cream finish.

Professional Ratings

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2010 Moritz Vineyard Syrah is scented of cassis, blueberry preserves and Provencal herbs with hints of raw meat and black olives. Full, rich and concentrated, the savory fruit is supported by firm tannins and crisp acid throughout a lengthy finish. Drink it 2014 to 2024+. Rating: 94+

Clarendon Hills, Australia
Clarendon Hills Winery Video

Clarendon Hills is a small family-run winery based in Clarendon, South Australia. The company was founded by biochemist, Roman Bratasiuk, in 1990. The story of Clarendon Hills is one of passion, dedication and commitment to exception wine. It all began when this biochemist and wine lover decided to produce his own wine. Though he'd never trained as a winemaker, Roman let himself be guided by his refined palate and scientific knowledge. Following his favorite producers and preferred styles, Roman sought to make a version of the wines he loved.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”

Known for opulent red wines with intense power and concentration, McLaren Vale is home to perhaps the most “classic” style of Australian Shiraz. Vinified on its own or in Rhône Blends, these hot-climate wines are deeply colored and high in extract with signature hints of dark chocolate and licorice. Cabernet Sauvignon is also produced in a similar style.

Whites, often made from Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc tend to be opulent and full of tropical, stone and citrus fruit.
