Winemaker Notes

The Violette cuvee is a blend of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Sauvignon, by its generosity will bring a spicy side, with touches of licorice, as well as a fruity side (cherry, prunes, blackcurrant and blackberry). A varietal with a robust and powerful character which will unite with the Cabernet Franc to gain in freshness and liveliness. A complex, unctuous wine with elegant tannins. Notes of undergrowth, leather and cooked fruit reveal themselves over time. Good aging potential.

Pair with beautiful red meat, crystal salt and new potatoes or lamb navarin with potatoes and vegetables. For lovers of red wine and cheese, there's nothing like an Époisse with this wine.

Blend: 75% Cabernet Franc, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon

While this perfumed wine from the Anne-Claude Leflaive Loire estate still has a firm tannic structure, it revels in its rich black fruits. Cabernet Franc is prominent in the biodynamically grown blend, layering spiciness into the ripe tannins of Cabernet Sauvignon. Wait until at least 2022 to drink this wine.

The 2017 Anjou Violette is a deep and intensely fruity but a bit volatile Cabernet blend on the nose, with blackberry and leafy aromas. Full-bodied, pure, fresh and tannic on the nose. Silky, intense and juicy on the palate, this is a fresh and stimulating bitter, fresh and tensioned Cabernet blend with kumquat aromas on the finish. Tart, a bit drying.

Anne-Claude Leflaive took on this 20-acre biodynamic project in Anjou with her husband, Christian Jacques, in 2008; they brought in Sylvain Potin, who has continued to run the property since Leflaive’s death in 2015. This blend (three-quarters cabernet franc, the rest cabernet sauvignon) shows dark fruit—silky plum and blueberry jam—but the wine’s steely tannins support its ripeness, and the mineral edge keeps it in line.

Anne-Claude Leflaive and Christian Jacques purchased Clau de Nell in 2008; Sylvain Potin joined the team as estate manager in 2009. The property is comprised of 10 hectares (24.7 acres) of vines on a gently sloping hill surrounded by open countryside. The highest point of Clau de Nell offers a glimpse of the Loire in the distance; from here, an uninterrupted view unveils the sky and the river on the horizon, as well as rows of Grolleau, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc. As with Domaine Leflaive, all of Clau de Nell’s wines are 100 percent biodynamic.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.

Praised for its stately Renaissance-era chateaux, the picturesque Loire valley produces pleasant wines of just about every style. Just south of Paris, the appellation lies along the river of the same name and stretches from the Atlantic coast to the center of France.

The Loire can be divided into three main growing areas, from west to east: the Lower Loire, Middle Loire, and Upper/Central Loire. The Pay Nantais region of the Lower Loire—farthest west and closest to the Atlantic—has a maritime climate and focuses on the Melon de Bourgogne variety, which makes refreshing, crisp, aromatic whites.

The Middle Loire contains Anjou, Saumur and Touraine. In Anjou, Chenin Blanc produces some of, if not the most, outstanding dry and sweet wines with a sleek, mineral edge and characteristics of crisp apple, pear and honeysuckle. Cabernet Franc dominates red and rosé production here, supported often by Grolleau and Cabernet Sauvignon. Sparkling Crémant de Loire is a specialty of Saumur. Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc are common in Touraine as well, along with Sauvignon Blanc, Gamay and Malbec (known locally as Côt).

The Upper Loire, with a warm, continental climate, is Sauvignon Blanc country, home to the world-renowned appellations of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. Pinot Noir and Gamay produce bright, easy-drinking red wines here.
