Winemaker Notes

A fantastic expression of what our Greywacke river Stones are capable of, this Sauvignon Blanc has a fresh acid backbone and delicate salinity lead to a mouth-watering mineral finish…

Serve with fresh oysters, pan-fried snapper and asparagus.

This is so polished and concentrated. It has superbly fresh lime, passion fruit and guava, as well as some fresh herbs and wet stones. The palate has attractively detailed and focused flavors with a zesty, fresh line of acidity and plenty of intense, lively and refreshing lime and passion-fruit flavor. Sleek and polished. Drink over the next three years.

COMMENTARY: The 2020 Clos Henri Sauvignon Blanc is focused and pure. TASTING NOTES: This wine shines with aromas and flavors of ripe fruit, mineral notes, and dried herbs. Try it with fresh salmon, tuna, and other sashimi delights. (Tasted: February 14, 2022, San Francisco, CA)

Attractive hints of crushed stone, graphite and nettle leaves appear on the nose of Clos Henri's 2019 Sauvignon Blanc. Backed by layers of white grapefruit and riper notions of stone fruit, this medium-bodied wine is a fine effort. The silky, expansive mouthfeel leads into a long, gently textured finish that leaves tasters refreshed and yearning for another sip. After some irregular performances, this property seems to be finding its stride.

This bottling of biodynamic producer Clos Henri’s Sauvignon is currently on the quiet side. There’s some oyster shell reduction at first but once it opens in the glass, characters of lime leaf, lemon zest and pineapple rind float to the fore, followed by green herbs, flint and white spice. The palate is medium in weight and has a lovely texture, thanks to time on lees and partial barrel aging. It’s elegant but a bit reticent. A classy, food-friendly bottling that should blossom in another few years.

Clos Henri, New Zealand
Clos Henri Winery Video
Nestled under the southern foothills of Marlborough's Wairau Valley, Clos Henri is the wine estate meticulously established and organically run by the famous Sancerre wine growing family of Henri Bourgeois. Gathering 10 generations of know-how with Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, the family has broadened their horizons and continue to craft exceptional wines in the New World. From the three different soil types of the estate, the family uses the best of French and New World winegrowing techniques to capture the essence of Marlborough's intense character and reveal the identity and depth of the Clos Henri terroir.

Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.

An icon and leading region of New Zealand's distinctive style of Sauvignon blanc, Marlborough has a unique terroir, making it ideal for high quality grape production (of many varieties). Despite some common generalizations, which could be fairly justified given that Marlborough is responsible for 90% of New Zealand's Sauvignon blanc production, the wines from this region are actually anything but homogenous. At the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, the vineyards of Marlborough benefit from well-draining, stony soils, a dry, sunny climate and wide temperature fluctuations between day and night, a phenomenon that supports a perfect balance between berry ripeness and acidity.

The region’s king variety, Sauvignon blanc, is beloved for its pungent, aromatic character with notes of exotic tropical fruit, freshly cut grass and green bell pepper along with a refreshing streak of stony minerality. These wines are made in a wide range of styles, and winemakers take advantage of various clones, vineyard sites, fermentation styles, lees-stirring and aging regimens to differentiate their bottlings, one from one another.

Also produced successfully here are fruit-forward Pinot noirs (especially where soils are clay-rich), elegant Riesling, Pinot gris and Gewürztraminer.
