COMMENTARY: The 2020 Clos LaChance Estate Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc is a lovely example of this grape variety. TASTING NOTES: This wine exhibits aromas and flavors of dried earth, herbs, tart citrus, and spice notes. Enjoy it with steamed clams in black bean sauce. Clos LaChance is a family owned and operated winery. Started by Bill and Brenda Murphy (bottom left and bottom middle), they began making Chardonnay sourced from the vineyard planted in the backyard of their Saratoga home. Their winemaking hobby turned into a passion and a few years later, Bill and Brenda founded Clos LaChance winery in San Martin, just 30 minutes south of San Jose Ca. They later hired their two daughters, Kristin (top) and Chery (bottom right) who help run the winery today.

Sometimes light and crisp, other times rich and creamy, Bordeaux White Blends typically consist of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Often, a small amount of Muscadelle or Sauvignon Gris is included for added intrigue. Popularized in Bordeaux, the blend is often mimicked throughout the New World. Somm Secret—Sauternes and Barsac are usually reserved for dessert, but they can be served before, during or after a meal. Try these sweet wines as an aperitif with jamón ibérico, oysters with a spicy mignonette or during dinner alongside hearty Alsatian sausage.

The largest and perhaps most varied of California’s wine-growing regions, the Central Coast produces a good majority of the state's wine. This vast California wine district stretches from San Francisco all the way to Santa Barbara along the coast, and reaches inland nearly all the way to the Central Valley.

Encompassing an extremely diverse array of climates, soil types and wine styles, it contains many smaller sub-AVAs, including San Francisco Bay, Monterey, the Santa Cruz Mountains, Paso Robles, Edna Valley, Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Maria Valley.

While the Central Coast California wine region could probably support almost any major grape varietiy, it is famous for a few Central Coast reds and whites. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel are among the major ones. The Central Coast is home to many of the state's small, artisanal wineries crafting unique, high-quality wines, as well as larger producers also making exceptional wines.
