Winemaker Notes

Blackberries and plums nestle among cocoa, anise and wildflowers. On the palate a bright opening of black currants leads to a lingering finish of rich chocolaty tannins.

Dry-aged New York Strip Loin, Lamb Navarin, Polenta with Portobello and Crimini Mushrooms highlighted by Caramelized Onions.

Blend: 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot, 3% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot

Professional Ratings

Combining Cabernet with Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot, in that order percentage-wise, this is a well-made wine. Oaky and dusty with refined tannins, its fruit brightly centers around raspberry and red currant.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Anthology exhibits a dense purple color as well as attractive floral, blackcurrant and blue fruit-dominated aromatics. The enticing bouquet is followed by a medium-bodied, pure, complete wine with a solid attack, mid-palate and finish. There is noticeable, but well-integrated tannin in this excellent/outstanding effort. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.

Mike McGrath blends this wine from 14 different districts of Napa Valley. It’s 75 percent cabernet sauvignon, with smaller amounts of franc, merlot, malbec and petit verdot. This has the tobacco-scented tannins of his 2012 Napa Valley Cabernet, with a tarry blackness lending the wine depth. It’s juicy and clean.

Conn Creek is a boutique winery on the Silverado Trail in the Rutherford district. For 40 years, the winery has focused on Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-styled wines. In search of the best Cabernet Sauvignon, we've discovered many exceptional single-vineyard sites throughout Napa Valley.

Today, Conn Creek sources fruit from prized vineyards in nearly all of Napa Valley's 15 renowned sub-appellations to provide winemaker Mike McGrath with an unparalleled palette from which to blend each wine. It's an approach that captures the "Best of Napa Valley."

Undoubtedly proving its merit over and over, Napa Valley is a now a leading force in the world of prestigious red wine regions. Though Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley, other red varieties certainly thrive here. Important but often overlooked include Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties well-regarded on their own as well as for their blending capacities. Very old vine Zinfandel represents an important historical stronghold for the region and Pinot noir is produced in the cooler southern parts, close to the San Pablo Bay.

Perfectly situated running north to south, the valley acts as a corridor, pulling cool, moist air up from the San Pablo Bay in the evenings during the hot days of the growing season, which leads to even and slow grape ripening. Furthermore the valley claims over 100 soil variations including layers of volcanic, gravel, sand and silt—a combination excellent for world-class red wine production.
