An elegant and voluptuous Pinot Noir with a bright ruby red coloring. The nose presents amazing finesse and complexity, where notes of fresh cherry, strawberry, raspberry and plum, mingle with background hints of leather and smoke. Outstanding extraction and a deliciously long and soft finish. This sophisticated and complex wine is the result of New World fruit vinified according to traditional Burgundy methods.

    This grows at the Triangulo Vineyard, planted in the mid- 1990s in the warmer, eastern reaches of the Casablanca Valley. It’s a ripe pinot noir, with refreshing notes of strawberry and blackberry, as lovely rose scents and spicy touches remain in the background. It has a tight, firm structure, with enough grip for game.

    The 2014 20 Barrels Pinot Noir was sourced from vines planted in 1980 in their Fundo El Triángulo estate in Casablanca. The brand was born in 1996 when they selected their best 20 barrels of the variety. The 2014 saw severe frost that reduced yields and provided for concentrated wines. The grapes were destemmed but not crushed and were put through a carbonic maceration in small vats at low temperature for a week, and then they were foot trodden and fermented with manual pigeage. The wine was moved by gravity to French oak barrels where it completed one year aging, but 20% of the volume spent that time in concrete eggs. There is quite a jump in quality from the Single Vineyard here (the wine is also one year older and with more bottle age); there is more depth and complexity here, something earthy, with hints of truffle. The palate is super elegant, with fine-grained tannins and very focused flavors, with good freshness and balance. Super tasty. A remarkable Pinot Noir. It seems like 2014 was a good vintage for the variety. 60,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2015.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

A region that has become synonymous with some of the best whites of Chile, the Casablanca Valley is full of dozens of bodegas who either grow fruit here or come from outside to source from local growers for their own white wine programs. The valley runs from east to west, which means that its westernmost vineyards receive the most cooling influence from the reliable afternoon sea breezes. The soils also tend to be heavier in clay in the west, whereas the eastern end of the valley is warmer and its soils are predominantly granitic. Sauvignon blanc thrives here, Chardonnay does well and Pinot noir is not uncommon.
