Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The nose is initially quite dark and brooding. Black forest berries, woody spices and soil like notes slowly give way to brighter undertones of raspberry, blueberry, and florals. The palate tells a slightly different story with a raft of red fruit characters such as raspberry and stewed rhubarb paired with an almost cranberry-like acidity. The tannins are verging on gritty, in a tantalizing sense. This appealing combination of red fruits, crisp acidity, and vibrant tannin gives an overall impression of freshness and youth, and indicates that this wine will evolve elegantly over the next 5 to 8 years, growing in richness, roundness, and complexity as it does so.

For the love of Grenache, from the beginning of my career, I have always been a fan of this grape variety. The 2013 d'Arenberg Custodian is such a beautiful and well balanced red wine. It shows bright red fruits, excellent freshness, and a lasting impression in the finish. (Tasted: May 3, 2017, San Francisco, CA)

d'Arenberg, Australia
d'Arenberg Adelaide Hills Winery Image

d'Arenberg is one of the undisputed kings of Australian Shiraz and other Rhone varieties that have historically defined the region. A century on, their vineyards have grown to some 450 acres in McLaren Vale, including Shiraz dating back to d'Arenberg's first plantings in 1912, and nearly one-third of McLaren Vale's old bush-vine Grenache. Fourth generation winemaker, Chester Osborn, recently converted all of the family's vineyards to organics and biodynamics and moved to solar energy in the winery. All the while, in terms of winemaking, not much has changed--all the wines are basket-pressed, the reds foot-trodden during fermentation; everything is done in small batches, leading to an impressive array of bottlings every year, each showing a different facet of McLaren Vale terroir. Having been inducted into Wine & Spirits Magazine's Hall of Fame for earning a place on its Top 100 Wineries nine times, this accolade is a reflection of d'Arenberg's revered reputation worldwide.
