Winemaker Notes

Intensely dark, almost black with a purple hue. The nose is lifted and fragrant with blueberry and violets leaping from the glass before a complex background of licorice, boot polish, freshly turned earth and cooked meat emerges. Each sniff reveals more intriguing characters. The palate carefully balances ripeness and elegance opening with fruit characters of plum and blackberry leaf before nuances of smoked meats, forest floor and cinnamon stick are revealed. The earthy character is a real highlight and provides wonderful elegance as the palate builds nicely to a long finish with fine powdery tannins rounding it out nicely. Roussanne ages very well and will fill out the mid palate further in time with careful cellaring. Decanting encouraged.

The 2008 The Wild Pixie is a blend of 95% Shiraz and 5% Roussanne aged for 12 months in mostly seasoned French oak. Opaque purple-colored, it offers up an enticing perfume of cedar, smoke, game, bacon, and blueberry. Firm and flavorful on the palate (from fruit picked before the heat wave), this savory, lengthy wine will evolve for 2-3 years and deliver prime drinking from 2012 to 2020. Rating: 91+

d'Arenberg, Australia
d'Arenberg Adelaide Hills Winery Image

d'Arenberg is one of the undisputed kings of Australian Shiraz and other Rhone varieties that have historically defined the region. A century on, their vineyards have grown to some 450 acres in McLaren Vale, including Shiraz dating back to d'Arenberg's first plantings in 1912, and nearly one-third of McLaren Vale's old bush-vine Grenache. Fourth generation winemaker, Chester Osborn, recently converted all of the family's vineyards to organics and biodynamics and moved to solar energy in the winery. All the while, in terms of winemaking, not much has changed--all the wines are basket-pressed, the reds foot-trodden during fermentation; everything is done in small batches, leading to an impressive array of bottlings every year, each showing a different facet of McLaren Vale terroir. Having been inducted into Wine & Spirits Magazine's Hall of Fame for earning a place on its Top 100 Wineries nine times, this accolade is a reflection of d'Arenberg's revered reputation worldwide.

Full and silky in body but also charmingly crisp, Roussanne is native to the Rhône Valley of France. It is responsible for some of the finest Northern Rhône white wines. Roussanne adds richness and acidity to Marsanne’s soft, fruitiness, making age worthy and highly respected whites. Somm Secret—Roussanne takes its name from the French word, roux, meaning rouge or red because of the berry’s pink glow. In California, virtually all of the 339 acres of Roussanne come from true clones brought over by Tablas Creek and John Alban.

Known for opulent red wines with intense power and concentration, McLaren Vale is home to perhaps the most “classic” style of Australian Shiraz. Vinified on its own or in Rhône Blends, these hot-climate wines are deeply colored and high in extract with signature hints of dark chocolate and licorice. Cabernet Sauvignon is also produced in a similar style.

Whites, often made from Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc tend to be opulent and full of tropical, stone and citrus fruit.
