Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Sumptuous gold-pink hue flecked with copper. The elegant beads of bubbles give it a joyful, almost dancing, appearance. The attractive nose develops delicate aromas of slightly jammy red fruit accompanied by subtle notes of vanilla.

The palate is equally attractive, offering us a "recital" of complexity against a backdrop of red fruit such as strawberries and red currants, as well as dense fruit such as blackcurrants. The finish remains elegant and shows a velvety texture. It is complemented by a very classy balance between power and freshness.

An extremely promising cuvée, in the purest Deutz style, it fits neatly within Maison Deutz' "Trio de Prestige". It shows traits of character that reflect its originality.

A luxurious aperitif, it will also partner well with delicate, subtle, and even spicy, dishes. It will pair very nicely with a grilled lobster or with the fine flesh of delicate fish such as Red Mullet or John Dory. It can also complement and will even magnify, a Kobe beef carpaccio or a fine pigeon cooked in cherries.

Blend: 57% Pinot Noir, 43% Chardonnay

This is one of two prestige cuvées from this house, under the same ownership as Roederer Champagne. Always a seductive wine, this vintage has excelled itself. Its poise, restrained elegance and fragrant fruitiness are impeccable. Acidity, red fruits and a crisp texture are all present. Let the wine age and drink from 2022.

Just 1,200 bottles of this prestige cuvée were made in 2009, a blend of 57% Pinot Noir from vineyards in Ay, Verzenay, Ambonnay and Bouzy. The 43% Chardonnay comes from Avize, Mesnil sur Oger, Chouilly and Villers-Marmery. Its gorgeous colour comes from the inclusion of 6% Pinot Noir still wine, produced by Deutz from plots of old vines on the Ay hillside known as ‘La Belle’, as well as from plots in Mareuil-sur-Ay called ‘Cumaine’ and ‘Charmont’. Classically styled, Deutz's savoir-faire has delivered an elegantly vinous rose with sweet, bright strawberry and redcurrant fruits juxtaposed with savoury toast and brioche. As always, its very pure and precise with a ripe, moreish texture in perfect counterpoint to the fresh, tingling acidity. A lovely benchmark expression of fine rosé, with great versatility to work as an aperitif or with food.

The peach and lemon-rind aromas are very impressive on the nose. Some raspberry sorbet. Medium to full body. Shows depth and focus. Lots of flavor. Hints of apple underneath. Drink now.

COMMENTARY: The 2009 Champagne Deutz Amour de Deutz is dynamic and energetic. TASTING NOTES: This wine excels with lasting aromas and flavors of savory spices, earth, and baked bread. Pair it with oven-baked salmon in parchment. (Tasted: April 27, 2022, San Francisco, CA)

The recently released 2009 Brut Rosé Millésime Amour de Deutz is showing beautifully, wafting from the glass with a classy bouquet of citrus oil, crisp red apple, warm brioche, sourdough bread and dried rose petals. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fine-boned and elegant, with racy acids, a pretty core of fruit, a delicate mousse and a deceptively long finish. Understated but displaying terrific finesse, this wine exemplifies the Deutz style.

Creamy and elegant, with a lovely, mouthwatering juiciness to the well-knit acidity and a fine, chalk-tinged underpinning to the delicate flavors of nectarine, white cherry, spring blossom and candied pink grapefruit zest. Offers a fresh, lingering finish. Disgorged May 2018. Drink now through 2029.

Deutz Champagne Winery Image

Since 1838, Champagne Deutz, one of the oldest members of the former and prestigious Association of Grandes Marques, has been making champagnes of a distinctive style characterized by a perfect harmony of finesse, elegant vinosity and complexity.

Sourcing from 300 hectares (approx. 615 acres) of vineyards, amongst the finest of Champagne’s crus, as well as a rigorous selection of the choice bunches, allow Deutz to use only top quality grapes.

The wines are slowly and carefully aged in the cool hush of the 3 kilometres of the House cellars which have been carved in the chalky soil of the famous historic village of Aÿ.

The “DEUTZ trio Prestige” comprises three prestige cuvées, each with its very distinct personality. William Deutz is made from the best pinots and chardonnays; Amour de Deutz is composed uniquely of the finest chardonnays ; finally there is Amour de Deutz Rosé. In each of these styles, Maison DEUTZ shows the full extent of its know-how and its attachment to precise, finely-tuned wines.

Each blend, from the renowned Deutz Brut Classic, is recognized for its high quality and remarkable consistency. Year after year, each of them epitomizes the expertise and the passion of Maison Deutz for its finely-tuned champagnes.

What are the different types of sparkling rosé wine?

Rosé sparkling wines like Champagne, Prosecco, Cava, and others make a fun and festive alternative to regular bubbles—but don’t snub these as not as important as their clear counterparts. Rosé Champagnes (i.e., those coming from the Champagne region of France) are made in the same basic way as regular Champagne, from the same grapes and the same region. Most other regions where sparkling wine is produced, and where red grape varieties also grow, also make a rosé version.

How is sparkling rosé wine made?

There are two main methods to make rosé sparkling wine. Typically, either white wine is blended with red wine to make a rosé base wine, or only red grapes are used but spend a short period of time on their skins (maceration) to make rosé colored juice before pressing and fermentation. In either case the base wine goes through a second fermentation (the one that makes the bubbles) through any of the various sparkling wine making methods.

What gives rosé Champagne and sparkling wine their color and bubbles?

The bubbles in sparkling wine are formed when the base wine undergoes a secondary fermentation, which traps carbon dioxide inside the bottle or fermentation vessel. During this stage, the yeast cells can absorb some of the wine’s color but for the most part, the pink hue remains.

How do you serve rosé sparkling wine?

Treat rosé sparkling wine as you would treat any Champagne, Prosecco, Cava, and other sparkling wine of comparable quality. For storing in any long-term sense, these should be kept at cellar temperature, about 55F. For serving, cool to about 40F to 50F. As for drinking, the best glasses have a stem and a flute or tulip shape to allow the bead (bubbles) and beautiful rosé hue to show.

How long do rosé Champagne and sparkling wine last?

Most rosé versions of Prosecco, Champagne, Cava or others around the “$20 and under” price point are intended for early consumption. Those made using the traditional method with extended cellar time before release (e.g., Champagne or Crémant) can typically improve with age. If you are unsure, definitely consult a wine professional for guidance.

Associated with luxury, celebration, and romance, the region, Champagne, is home to the world’s most prized sparkling wine. In order to bear the label, ‘Champagne’, a sparkling wine must originate from this northeastern region of France—called Champagne—and adhere to strict quality standards. Made up of the three towns Reims, Épernay, and Aÿ, it was here that the traditional method of sparkling wine production was both invented and perfected, birthing a winemaking technique as well as a flavor profile that is now emulated worldwide.

Well-drained, limestone and chalky soil defines much of the region, which lend a mineral component to its wines. Champagne’s cold, continental climate promotes ample acidity in its grapes but weather differences from year to year can create significant variation between vintages. While vintage Champagnes are produced in exceptional years, non-vintage cuvées are produced annually from a blend of several years in order to produce Champagnes that maintain a consistent house style.

With nearly negligible exceptions, . These can be blended together or bottled as individual varietal Champagnes, depending on the final style of wine desired. Chardonnay, the only white variety, contributes freshness, elegance, lively acidity and notes of citrus, orchard fruit and white flowers. Pinot Noir and its relative Pinot Meunier, provide the backbone to many blends, adding structure, body and supple red fruit flavors. Wines with a large proportion of Pinot Meunier will be ready to drink earlier, while Pinot Noir contributes to longevity. Whether it is white or rosé, most Champagne is made from a blend of red and white grapes—and uniquely, rosé is often produce by blending together red and white wine. A Champagne made exclusively from Chardonnay will be labeled as ‘blanc de blancs,’ while ones comprised of only red grapes are called ‘blanc de noirs.’
