    Winemaker Notes

Ripe red berries, the aromatic scent of summer lavender and rosemary, a whiff of wild mushrooms—the aromas of Provence are loud and clear. Juicy and ripe but light on the tongue, with cherries, pomegranate jam and raspberries. Mouth-watering and savory, every sip goes down far too easy—and what's more, the wine is 100% organic.

    Domaine Oratoire St Martin, France
Like Bouïssiere in Gigondas and Martinelle in Ventoux, L’Oratoire Saint-Martin is an estate that is unquestionably a benchmark for quality for villages in the Côtes du Rhône. They are one of the “unknown” greats in the south; for more than 20 years L’Oratoire has mentored a number of young southern winemakers who have gone on to make waves of their own.

The estate’s foothill vineyards—with their preponderance of chalk—are the key to L’Oratoire’s fruity, vibrant blends and relatively low-alcohol wines. These wines defy the claim that most southern Rhône blends are by default too heavy or alcoholic. Ripe black and red currants are the wines’ primary flavors. Aromas of red roses mix with classic Rhône rosemary, thyme and pine.

With bold fruit flavors and accents of sweet spice, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre form the base of the classic Rhône Red Blend, while Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise often come in to play. Though they originated from France’s southern Rhône Valley, with some creative interpretation, Rhône blends have also become popular in other countries. Somm Secret—Putting their own local spin on the Rhône Red Blend, those from Priorat often include Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In California, it is not uncommon to see Petite Sirah make an appearance.

Typically thought of as a baby Chateâuneuf-du-Pape, the term Côtes du Rhône actually doesn’t merely apply to the flatter outskirts of the major southern Rhône appellations, it also includes the fringes of well-respected northern Rhône appellations. White wines can be produced under the appellation name, but very little is actually made.

The region offers some of the best values in France and even some first-rate and age-worthy reds. Red wine varieties include most of the Chateâuneuf-du-Pape varieties like Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsault, and Counoise, as well as Carignan. White grapes grown include Grenache blanc, Roussanne and Viognier, among others.
