Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

This is an atypical cuvee in terms of its complexity of aromas: deep spice, black fruit flavors and chocolate notes are overlaid with leather and a wild complexity.

An older vintage of the top cuvée that shows a subtly earthy, spicy thread through deep-set dark cherry and berry fruit. The palate is terrific, extremely expressive and focused with seamless length.

Excelling in the vintage, the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape les Hautes Brusquières is knockout stuff. Made from 60% Grenache, 39% Syrah and 1% Counoise, all from the Brusquières plateau located in the northern/western part of the appellation, it offers terrific black raspberry, roasted meats, licorice and spring flowers to go with a medium to full-bodied, silky, pure and layered feel on the palate. As with all of these new releases from Charbonnière, the tannin quality is exceptional. Enjoy this rock-star effort over the coming decade or longer.

Solid, showing good energy along the edges, with a briary feel running throughout the core of plum, blackberry and black cherry fruit. Hints of alder and juniper line the finish. Best from 2015 through 2025. 400 cases made.

Domaine de la Charbonniere Winery Image

It was in 1912 that Eugene Maret bought Domaine de la Charbonniere as a gift for his wife who was a native of Chateauneuf and the daughter of a winemaker. Their son Fernand Maret inherited a part of the Domaine and enlarged it upon the birth of his son Michel.

Today Michel Maret had over 16 hectares of vineyards located in the high plateaux of Les Brusquieres and La Crau both covered with the famous cailloux roulets and at Mourre des Perdix, sandy soil dotted with larger stones.

The passion and know-how of the winemaker, handpicking of the fruit, and careful sorting at the winery enable Michel Maret to optimize all the promise of a great terrior.

The vinification at the Domaine follows the classic style: no destemming, and three weeks fermentation in stainless steel vats, after which the wine is aged in large oak fourdes for 12-18 months.
