    Winemaker Notes

Pale gold in color, it is just right in taste with a fruity (apple, lemon) and floral (acacia) bouquet. Managing the temperature in the tank during fermentation helps keep the wine fresh. On the palate, it is greedy, energetic and stimulates the taste buds.

    Domaine de Rochebin, France
Domaine de Rochebin is situated at an altitude of 1,476 feet on hilltop overlooking the Saone plain, in the lieu-dit "en Normant", close to Azé, a town renowned for its prehistoric caves. The domaine’s coat of arms features the skull of a lion reminiscent of the great lion found in one of the caves. The wooded hillside of Azé borders the town of Cluny, whose abbey was one of the leading sites of medieval Christianity. Most of the vineyards belonging to the domaine come from the abbey’s former properties. As far back as the year 1000, its monks were laboring in the vineyards.

The diversity of the 115 acres of vines owned by this domaine enable it to grow all the prestigious Burgundy grape varieties.

The Marillier family have been vine-growers from father to son since 1921. Jean-Pierre Marillier has just handed the domaine over to its new owner, his son Mikaël, an enthusiastic young producer with a promising future. The domaine has nine full time employees.

A native but unique white grape to Burgundy, Aligoté is a light bodied white that often ends up unfairly lost in Chardonnay’s shadow. In Côte Chalonnaise, in a quaint village named Bouzeron, just south of the Côte de Beaune, Aligoté has its very own appellation where yields are limited in order to enhance flavors, acidity and overall quality. Somm Secret—Curiously, the famous producer, Domaine Ponsot, bottles a 100% Aligoté from its Premier Cru in Morey-Ste-Denis, Les Monts Luisants, made from Aligoté vines planted in 1911.

These are the fun, fruit-driven and lively Chardonnays of white Burgundy, often offering some fantastic values and options that you don’t have to cellar. Flavors range from fresh green apple and lemon to melon or pineapple; some of the best are fleshy and mineral driven or balanced by a light touch of oak.

Mâconnais Chardonnay may have the weight of their more serious Côte de Beaune sisters, but not quite the refinement. Still, this appellation is one of the best ways to jump from California Chardonnay to something new and begin to understand white Burgundy.

The Mâconnais region is warmer and drier than the rest of Burgundy to its north (Côte d’Or) and has a landscape of rolling hills and farmland interspersed among vineyards. The region produces a lot of Chardonnay—Viré-Clessé and Pouilly-Fuisse are among the best—and a very small amount of red wine from Gamay and Pinot Noir. The soils of Mâconnais remain limestone dominant like in the Côte d’Or, making it a wonderful spot for Chardonnay to thrive. Gamay's home of Beaujolais lies just to the south.
