    Somm Note

    Winemaker Notes

You have never had a Ventoux rouge as concentrated and complex as this one, simply because no other domaine in the region is as diligent and serious as Martinelle is. Saturated black fruits and baking spices, with cinnamon and licorice at the fore, dominate the nose; the mouth is velvety and deep, with poached cherries and plums, blackberry jam and lots of black pepper. Rich and ripe with good balance and grip. A serious, supple southern red blend (primarily Grenache and Syrah, with amounts of young Mourvèdre and Cinsault) with impressive staying power.

The Fayolles began estate-bottling their Hermitage and Crozes Hermitage wines with the 2003 vintage. Prior to that year, they were major suppliers to many renown Northern Rhone negociants.

Though they originated from France’s southern Rhône Valley, with some creative interpretation, Rhône blends have also become popular in other countries. Somm Secret—Putting their own local spin on the Rhône Red Blend, those from Priorat often include Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In California, it is not uncommon to see Petite Sirah make an appearance.

Stretching across the slopes of the Ventoux mountain in the southeastern region of the Rhône River Valley, Cotes du Ventoux excels in the production of spicy and characterful red blends based on Grenache, Syrah, and other indigenous varieties. The region also produces rich and aromatic whites and rosés.
