Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The blend of Mourvedre and Syrah gives elegance and finesse to the wine. Silky texture on the palate, balanced by fine tannins. Aromas of delicious black fruits which end with spicy notes on the finish (clove, black pepper and senteurs de garrigue). You can enjoy this wine with mediterranean food (such as Italian, south of France and Greek cuisine). It is a nice red wine for pairing with all kind of red meats and vegetables.

A new estate for me, Domaine du Somail covers 15 hectares in the heart of Minervois and is a collaboration between four friends. The estate has been farmed biodynamically since 2013 and they look to have made a sensational 2014 Minervois Vin de Plum. Checking in as 80% Mourvèdre and 20% Syrah, aged all in concrete, it offers lots of black raspberry and plum fruits, violets, and spring flowers in a lifted, fresh, beautifully pure style. It should drink reasonably well on release, yet have decade or more of longevity.

Located in the Eastern part of the Minervois appellation, Domaine du Somail's vines are deeply rooted in the terraces that used to go from the ancestral town of Minerve to the Mare Nostrum (or Mediterranean Sea). Minervois is one of the oldest wine-producing appellations, with vines planted by the Romans who understood that the gravelly soil and the blue sky were perfect for growing vines and olive trees. Since then, various populations and illustrious civilizations such as the Wisigoths, Vikings, Sarrasins, Cathares and Cistercian monks settled in Minervois.

Considered as the first wine region in the world, Languedoc is steeped in history. Honoring their roots, Domaine du Somail cares for their vines and are proud to preserve and enhance the most valuable resources the region has to offer to produce great wines. They epitomize the search for authenticity, elegance and finesse, so their wines are cultivated following the biodynamic principles. Understanding the soils and using the rhythms of the cosmos help to reveal the full potential of the terroir and vines.

With bold fruit flavors and accents of sweet spice, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre form the base of the classic Rhône Red Blend, while Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise often come in to play. Though they originated from France’s southern Rhône Valley, with some creative interpretation, Rhône blends have also become popular in other countries. Somm Secret—Putting their own local spin on the Rhône Red Blend, those from Priorat often include Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In California, it is not uncommon to see Petite Sirah make an appearance.

Recognized for its concentrated and sultry reds made predominantly of Carignan, Grenache and Syrah, this western Languedoc appellation is also famous for the charming and delicate fortified Vin Doux Naturel called Muscat de St. Jean de Minervois. The dry rosé and white wines of Minervois are also worth seeking out.
