    Somm Note

    Winemaker Notes

The 2015 vintage presents a brilliant gold color offering a very expressive nose on floral and mineral notes, brioche, citrus fruits, licorice, white fruits, pear, white peach, lime, dried fruits, coconut, almonds and honey. The palate is racy, powerful, straight and sharp. Smooth and elegant, a voluptuous substance with aromas of white peach, lime, brioche, honeysuckle, anise accompanied by a beautiful minerality with saline and iodine flavors bringing a lot of freshness. The length is masterful, the chews harmonious with a fine bitterness. A perfect balance that amazes with its character and depth!

    Domaine Gauby, France
Domaine Gauby is situated in and around the tiny, bucolic Roussillon town of Calce, inland from Perpignan and a short drive from the Cataluña border of Spain. Exiting the A9 and driving northwest into the eastern Pyrenees though the quiet, winding roads and precipitous hills of timeless beauty is a little bitter-sweet. This is a forgotten corner of France that is both wonderfully unspoiled and tragically neglected. Admittedly in recent years a handful of producers have set up camp in the Fenouillèdes and begun to deservedly gain international attention for some impeccably crafted wines from ancient vines. The most famous, Gerard Gauby, was born into a wine-making family with vines in Calce and took the reins in the 1980s. He thus was set to become one of the forerunners in developing the potential of the old vines and unique terroir of this region. More than twenty years on, Gerard Gauby's meticulous care for his vines tends to follow biodynamic principals that have been personally tested over 17-18 years of farming this way. In the winery he and his equally talented son, Lionel, use only natural yeasts and principals - no chaptalization, acidification, fining or filtration. They will not work with stainless steel, only cement and wood (including wooden fermenters and old foudres for inert storage).

Producing full-bodied white wines, Grenache Blanc can be unctuous and soft or floral and fresh. Some of the finest examples are terroir-driven, age-worthy wines. It is a key ingredient in white Châteauneuf-du-Pape and many white blends across southern France and NE Spain. Somm Secret—Grenache Blanc plays a key role in the vins doux naturels of Rivesaltes and a subsidiary role in those of Banyuls and Maury.

Defined by the rugged eastern edge of the Pyrenees Mountains and near-constant sunshine, Roussillon is a region rich in Spanish history and influence. In fact, the Roussillon people mainly identify with being Catalan rather than French or Occitan.

Roussillon has been a culture of viticulture since the 7th century BC and not surprisingly, highly influenced by Spain in their winemaking techniques and wine styles. Furthermore, the arid, exposed, steep and uneven valleys of this so-called Pyrénées-Orientales zone, guarantee that grape yields are low and berries are small and concentrated. The region was quick to adopt a specific fortification process (locally called mutage), introduced by a Catalan physician in the 13th century. Seen as beneficial to the region’s whites, soon Roussillon also applied the process to the vinification of Grenache. Mutage involves fortifying the grape must (or must and skins together depending on desired effect) with a neutral grape spirit to arrest fermentation, resulting in a slightly sweet, high alcohol (15-18%), but still varietally expressive and aromatically complex wine called, vin doux naturel. Two clones of Muscat and Grenache of various colors are mainly responsible for the excellent vins doux naturels in the notable sub-appellations of Rivesaltes, Banyuls and Maury.

More recently modern winemaking techniques, coupled with a near perfect climate and optimal soils, altitudes and exposures have allowed Roussillon to quickly escalate the quality and popularity of its dry red wines as well, namely those of Maury, Cotes du Roussillon-Villages and Collioure.
