The 2017 Meursault Les Narvaux is showing brilliantly from bottle, opening in the glass with scents of citrus oil, white flowers, Anjou pear and freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, tensile and searingly mineral, this is a concentrated but comparatively austere Narvaux that will need time to unwind. Rating: 91+

COMMENTARY: Aside from my love of Puligny-Montrachet, I always become excited with an opportunity to savor a Meursault. The 2017 Domaine Rémi Les Narvaux showed superbly at a recent tasting in a room filled with stars. TASTING NOTES: This wine displays excellent balance and style. Its aroma and flavors of ripe fruit and earth stay long and enticingly on the palate. Pair it with sautéed sea scallops with a piquant Meyer lemon sauce. (Tasted: March 11, 2019, San Francisco, CA)

Rémi Jobard is the dynamic son of Charles Jobard and nephew to Francois Jobard. Growing up and learning form these legendary brothers inspired Rémi to follow in his father’s footsteps and eventually take the helm at this remarkable domaine. As is normally the case in Burgundy, with a famous last name comes an enviable assortment of vineyards. When Rémi took full control in 1996, he found himself presiding over Meursault and Puligny based Bourgogne Blancs, 4 high altitude Meursault lieu dits, and 3 of the best situated parcels of 1er crus.
Since 1994, the domaine has not used any herbicides or pesticides. After Rémi took over, he decided to take the quality of farming to the next level, converting to organics and eventually getting certification in 2011. All of Rémi’s wines show a breathtaking clarity of terroir, which come from the impeccable farming and a simple hands-off approach in the cellar; all of the wines are aged in a mixture of barrique and large older foudre. When asked about his approach Rémi says, “We are very privileged to have great terroir in Meursault. Everything I do in the vineyard and in my cellar is to make sure that terroir is transparent and completely unobscured.” Tasting through the lineup is a true masterclass of Meursault – a sensual tour of rock and vine.
Farming Practice: Certified Organic
One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.
Known to offer a magical balance of smoothness and freshness, Meursault's quality is hard to rival. The village lies in the middle of Côte de Beaune, just south of Volnay. Meursault is said to mean “mouse’s jump” because in the past the plots producing Pinot Noir and those producing Chardonnay were no more than a mouse’s jump from one another. Today the village is almost exclusively Chardonnay. A tiny bit of Pinot Noir is produced here with the best coming from Les Santenots on its northern side near Volnay.
While there are no Grands Crus, Meursault’s numerous acclaimed Premiers Crus can compete with any other top-notch white Burgundy. Some to know are Les Perrières, Les Genevrières, Les Charmes, Le Poruzot, Les Bouchères and Les Gouttes d’Or.
Meursault produces outstanding village level wines as well. In general great Premiers Crus and even village level Meursault (Chardonnay) have enticing aromas of lime peel, tropical fruit, crushed rocks, spice and hazelnut. On the palate there is a wonderful balance of brightness and a seductive length with flavors of white peach, pineapple and citrus.
