Winemaker Notes

The 2013 vintage is showing lots of lively spice. This wine opens with deep blackberry and currant on the nose with hints of anise. The mouthfeel is gentle, and the finish is lengthy. This Cabernet is very characteristic of a Dry Creek Valley Bordeaux. It offers intensity and richness and reflects the terroir beautifully.

Blend: 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside and Benchland Vineyards (aged 19 months in French oak) is a beauty. This serious Cabernet Sauvignon showcases just how good Cabernet can be from Dry Creek, although most readers would agree it is better known for Zinfandel. Dense ruby/purple, loads of black cherry, blackcurrant and dusty/loamy soil notes are present in this medium to full-bodied, concentrated and powerful wine. Alcohol is listed at 14.5%, but it may possibly be slightly higher. This is a blockbuster, full-bodied, impressively endowed Cabernet Sauvignon to drink over the next 20-25 years.

Dry Creek Vineyard, California
Dry Creek Vineyard Winery Video

Established in 1972, Dry Creek Vineyard is Dry Creek Valley’s flagship winery located in the heart of Sonoma County, California. As the region’s first new winery following Prohibition, founder David Stare paved the way for a viticultural rebirth in this vibrant winegrowing appellation. Among other industry benchmarks, Dry Creek Vineyard is recognized as the first winery to plant Sauvignon Blanc in the Dry Creek Valley, and was also the first to use the term “Meritage” with the 1985 vintage.

This premier, family-owned winery is now led by the second generation. Dave’s daughter, Kim Stare Wallace, serves as President overseeing a successful family winemaking and grape growing business that includes 185 acres of sustainably farmed vineyards. The second generation is dedicated to all aspects of the business, from vine to shelf, with a goal to remain one of the last truly private, family-owned, iconic wineries consistently producing 90+ point wines.

Dry Creek Vineyard is firmly committed to a “No Compromises” philosophy, producing appellation-focused, terroir-driven, varietal-defining wines, including Heritage Vines Zinfandel, which was selected as a Wine Spectator “Top 100” Wine of 2019. Named one of the Top 100 wineries of 2015 by Wine & Spirits Magazine and a Top 10 Tasting Room by USA TODAY, the winery is also 100% Certified Sustainable. Dry Creek Vineyard proudly produces delicious Dry Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and Meritage blends as well as a portfolio of single vineyard selections.

While Sonoma County is acclaimed—and rightfully so—for its Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Zinfandels, it also produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the region’s 18 American Viticultural Areas, only a handful produce top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon. These appellations include Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignons made in these appellations can offer a complex array of aromas and flavors. Fruit notes such as blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, black cherry and raspberry often are accompanied by hints of graphite, dusty earth, cigar box, toast and vanilla. The varietal has a rich history in Sonoma, and some of these Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet-based blends rival the best from Napa Valley.
