Winemaker Notes

The small lot of estate fruit produced a wine with lifted floral and dried pine needle notes to the dark red fruit aromas. Expansive on the palate with a minerally edge to the red fruit flavors that finishes with bright acidity and talc like tannins.

Subtle yet structured, this medium- bodied wine comes from the second vintage of Wells Guthrie's new winery DuPuis in Anderson Valley. It seems restrained and mineral-ish at first sniff, then opens up on the palate to offer captivating plum, raspberry and black-tea flavors wrapped in moderate fine-grained tannins. Light oak notes of ginger and toast accent the creamy, fruity center.

DuPuis Wines, California
Many know Wells Guthrie as the founder of Copain Wines, where he was an early advocate for the move away from big wines for big scores and a proponent for less ripeness and more balance. Having run his course at Copain Wines, Wells moved on a few years ago and has found a new home, quite literally, in the hills above Boonville in the Anderson Valley. With this new project, Wells comes full circle - back to the examples he first saw while staging with vignerons in Europe, before his U.S. winemaking journey began. While he will continue to make a number of single vineyard wines from the Anderson Valley from vineyards he has worked with for over a decade and knows intimately – the focus of the project will be the home estate. There are currently 7 acres of vines on a 40 acre property at 1200 feet above sea level. The vineyards are completely surrounded by natural forests and biodiversity. The farming is, of course, organic and the winemaking is gentle and simple with the only addition being a tiny bit of SO2. Wells and his family have made this property their home. He can see the vines from the kitchen table. He feels the same sun and breathes the same air and that connection with the vines is everything for Wells, as it is for any tried and true vigneron.
