Winemaker Notes

Dynamic garnet with subtle brick red edges. Tremendously expressive of wild berry, hibiscus, red plum, thyme, saddle leather, and wet earth aromatically. Assertive, but ripe, tannins with fresh acidity and sour fruit like unripe strawberry, rhubarb, and dried cranberry define a sturdy, yet bright, texture.

The 2018 Pinot Noir The Wrangler Grand Vent Vineyard is a fabulous wine that captures all of the elements that make the Ernest wines so appealing. A burst of sweet red berry fruit, sage, orange peel and mint give the 2018 its effusive aromatics and breadth. Vivid, translucent and exceptionally beautiful, the 2018 has a lot to offer. As always, this is a taut, decidedly nervy style. The 80% whole clusters are very nicely balanced.

Ernest Vineyards, California
Ernest Vineyards was built on a number of key concepts. A commitment to integrity, restraint, and beauty, they are most passionately committed to sourcing varietals from carefully selected vineyards around Sonoma County. Picking and choosing vineyard sites allows them to hold out for the very best grapes they can can find. They then use those grapes to make the wine they want to make.

Ernest Vineyards has partnered to build one of the most sophisticated production facilities in Wine Country today. Located in northern Sonoma County, this winery represents the next phase for crush facilities—a facility for like-minded small producers to have access to the absolute best in production equipment combined with tasting rooms and event space for their guests. Opened in 2017, they call it Grand Cru.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

A vast appellation covering Sonoma County’s Pacific coastline, the Sonoma Coast AVA runs all the way from the Mendocino County border, south to the San Pablo Bay. The region can actually be divided into two sections—the actual coastal vineyards, marked by marine soils, cool temperatures and saline ocean breezes—and the warmer, drier vineyards further inland, which are still heavily influenced by the Pacific but not quite with same intensity.

Contained within the appellation are the much smaller Fort Ross-Seaview and Petaluma Gap AVAs.

The Sonoma Coast is highly regarded for elegant Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and, increasingly, cool-climate Syrah. The wines have high acidity, moderate alcohol, firm tannin, and balanced ripeness.
