Winemaker Notes
The Carlotto family have been passionate wine-growers for three generations. It is their aim to reflect the local terroir in their wines, and therefore they provide the grapes with the special care they require, from the harvest to the final processing. Ferruccio Carlotto wines run to a capacity of approximately 18,000 bottles per year, mainly Vernatsch and above all the Pinot Noir Filari di Mazzòn and their own Lagrein, Di Ora in Ora. The first is grown on the hillside of Mazzon at the bottom of the Truden nature park, which is a unique terroir for the cultivation of Pinot Noir, while the ruby-red native Lagrein is impressive for its full body and smooth finish.
Incredibly concentrated and uncommonly sturdy in character, Lagrein has roots in the Alto Adige area and has recently experienced a great renaissance in popularity. While the climate is cool there, the sun is intense on the region’s steep slopes. Warm hillsides near the bustling city of Bolzano create the perfect environment for the production of intense reds from Lagrein. Somm Secret— Lagrein Kretzer (German) or Rosato (Italian) is the spicy rosé version, which is delicious with smoked fish and white meat.
