Winemaker Notes

La Encantada vineyard, or the "charmed place", was planted by Richard Sanford in 2000. It is located on the western fringe of the Santa Rita Hills appellation, where its northern exposure makes it one of the coolest sites in the AVA. Foxen sources Dijon Pinot Noir clones from 3 distinctive terroirs at La Encantada.

Professional Ratings

  • 90
Yet another Foxen Pinot that leads with lots of juicy, handsomely oaked fruit in the nose, this fairly full-scaled working follows with generous, like-minded flavors that are equally big on volume even if the wine is a bit tighter and firmer in build with a clear sense of finishing grip that bodes well for aging. It is, for now, slightly less rounded and not quite as refined as is companions, but time will work to temper its firmness and provide a welcome increase in overall polish.

Foxen Vineyard, California
Foxen Vineyard Winery Image
Bill Wathen and Dick Dore have been making wine together since 1985, when they founded Foxen Winery & Vineyard at the historic Rancho Tinaquaic in northern Santa Barbara County. Since that time, their dedication has remained the same - the creation of very small production, sustainably-farmed, vineyard-focused wines using a "minimalist" approach to winemaking. Foxen is named in memory of William Benjamin Foxen, an English sea captain and Dick's great-great grandfather, who came to Santa Barbara in the early 1800s and purchased the Rancho Tinaquaic. Captain Foxen adopted the distinctive "anchor" as his cattle brand, which became the trademark of the winery. Foxen is at home on the history Rancho Tinaquaic with its solar-powered winery, tasting room and 7200 "shack."

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

Sta. Rita Hills Wine

Santa Barbara, California

View all products

A superior source of California Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills is the coolest, westernmost sub-region of the larger Santa Ynez Valley appellation within Santa Barbara County. This relatively new AVA is unquestionably one to keep an eye on.

The climate of Sta. Rita Hills is a natural match for Chardonnay and Pinot noir, thanks to the crisp ocean breezes and well-drained, limestone-rich calcareous soil. Here, grapes ripen just enough, while retaining brisk acidity and harmonious balance.
