Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Isolation Ridge Shiraz is a bright, deep plum color, with a complex and concentrated nose expressing soft spicy and ripe plum notes with touches of mocha and a brooding earthiness with subtle floral characteristics. It is a medium weighted Shiraz with a good intensity of flavor with some subtle grainy tannins. Satsuma plum notes present on the nose and carry through to the palate with a vibrant acidity giving direction and freshness to the wine, reflective of its cool climate origins. Characteristics from a warmer 2011 vintage give this wine a drive and intensity expressed through the nice core of plum. Approachable now, it has the structure and finesse to reward long-term cellaring.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the intensely scented 2011 Isolation Ridge Shiraz shows crushed black cherries and blackberries on the nose, with hints of black pepper, dried Provence herbs and anise. Full-bodied with plenty of youthful blackberry and spice flavors, it has a medium level of rounded tannins and a vibrant herbal lift to the long finish. Drink it now to 2019.

Plump in the middle, this wine has plenty of plush fruit to balance the green rasp of herbal tannins and the through-line of acidity. This grows at the southern edge of Frankland, closer to the sea than most of the township’s vineyards. It’s built to age, or to decant for grilled lamb.

Frankland Estate A Family-Operated Winery Winery Image

Frankland Estate was established in 1988 by Barrie Smith and Judi Cullam who continue to be actively involved in every aspect of the vineyard and winery. They are now assisted by their daughter Elizabeth Smith, son Hunter Smith and a small, hardworking team who enjoy the diverse and idiosyncratic challenges associated with working in a family business. The winemaking philosophies at Frankland Estate reflect these influences as well as the hard-earned lessons gained from some 17 vintages in the Frankland River region. Our approach to winemaking is based on the principle that the most significant characteristics of a wine come from the soil and the vineyard environment. We aim to make wines that reflect nature rather than the hand of the winemaker. This is the basis of our commitment to sustainable farming and to working the land in accord with the cycles of nature. We carefully nurture the health of the soils in our vineyard and only take from our vineyards as much as can be replaced by natural processes. Our use of viticultural practices resulted in us gaining organic certification in 2009 with our 2010 vintage wines being released with the certified organic “bud” logo.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”
