Winemaker Notes

Agiorgitiko by Gaia is a well-structured wine with intense ripe fruit aromas and well-integrated oak flavors. Under proper cellar conditions, it can be aged 2-4 years after release, evolving an even more velvety and complex palate.

The full-bodied texture and robust tannins of this red make it an ideal pairing for red meat dishes that are rich, intense and spicy.

The 2016 Agiorgitiko Gai'a Estate was aged for 18 to 20 months in 90% new French oak. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. Just gorgeous, this dry and serious Estate Agiorgitiko is terrific on all fronts. Focused, precise and long on the finish, it maintains finesse and freshness despite being ripe and concentrated. The tannins are moderately ripe, so you can dive in now if you must, but the wine needs to evolve more. Give it a couple of years if you can. The one thing it most needs to acquire is expressiveness. At the moment, that is a bit muted by the wood (which it still handles surprisingly well). It seems serious and refined, but it needs to show off its Agiorgitiko character a bit more. With aeration, I saw evidence that will come. The question here is only how high the ceiling is.

Ribena and blackcurrant jam nose. Quite the modern rendition, blessed with ripe tannins and excellent blackcurrant fruit definition. A great barbecue wine.

Gaia Leon and Yiannis in the vineyards Winery Image
GAIA WINES was founded in 1994 by Leon Karatsalos and Yiannis Paraskevopoulos.

Thalassitis, a Santorini A.O.C. white wine, inaugurated the company's first appearance, and quickly won a place in the Greek wine market. The 9,800 numbered bottles of Thalassitis in 1994, rapidly rose to more than 100,000 in 1999, all the while maintaining its commitment to quality.

In 1996 GAIA WINES acquired a private vineyard in Koutsi region of Nemea, along with a perfectly equipped winery of a total capacity of 3.000hl.

Native the Peloponnese peninsula of Greece, Agioritiko is the star variety here and in fact, the only one permitted to carry the Nemea appellation. While it favors the hot Mediterranean climate of Greece, it performs best in Nemea’s high altitude mountain vineyards between 1,350 to 2,000 feet where fully ripe grapes can also achieve great acidity and structure. Somm Secret—As one of Greece's oldest varieties, wines made from Agioritiko were historically often associated with the half-god Heracules and referred to as the "Blood of Heracles.”
