Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The Gallo Signature Series Zinfandel comes primarily from estate vineyards, primarily in the Dry Creek Valley. One of the world’s premier Zinfandel regions, in 2015 the Dry Creek Valley produced a deeply layered, opulent Zinfandel. Rich and expansive, the wine opens with focused aromas of cracked black pepper, blackberry and clove. On the palate, fruit-forward notes of boysenberry, blueberry and cassis are framed by hints of dry-cured meat, cocoa and spice. This wine’s soft edges and extraordinarily long finish are complemented by hints of vanilla.

Blend: 93% Zinfandel , 7% Petite Sirah

Professional Ratings

Graham cracker and vanilla wafer aromas entice on the nose. This is a ripe, dense wine which boasts a sinewy backdrop of leather among a broad expanse of rich fruit flavors. A cinnamon note lingers on the finish.
  • 90
Plump, ripe and zesty, this offers soft, easygoing baked cherry, licorice and cracked pepper flavors. Drink now through 2023.

Gallo Signature Series, California
Gallo Signature Series Winery Image
The Gallo Signature Series honors the journey the Gallo Family started in 1933, and it celebrates how far the family has come. With some of California's best grapes at her fingertips, third-generation winemaker Gina Gallo has created three distinct wines that could only be crafted from the Gallo family's unique combination of vineyards. For Gina, the Gallo Signature Series expresses her family's unique combination of vineyards. For Gina, the Gallo Signature Series expresses her family's passion for great vineyards and great wine, and it reflects the best the Gallo Winery has to offer. The Gallo Signature Series marks a return to hands-on, artisanal winemaking for Gina, and it brings to life the enduring legacy of Ernest and Julio Gallo.

Unapologetically bold, spice-driven and jammy, Zinfandel has secured its title as the darling of California vintners by adapting well to the state's diverse microclimates and landscapes. Born in Croatia, it later made its way to southern Italy where it was named Primitivo. Fortunately, the imperial nursery of Vienna catalogued specimens of the vine, and it later made its way to New England in 1829. Parading the true American spirit, Zinfandel found a new home in California during the Gold Rush of 1849. Somm Secret—California's ancient vines of Zinfandel are those that survived the neglect of Prohibition; today these vines produce the most concentrated, ethereal and complex examples.

Dry Creek Valley Wine

Sonoma County, California

View all products

A multifaceted and highly reputable sub-region of Sonoma, Dry Creek Valley is responsible for a wide range of wine styles—both red and white. One of the smallest AVAs in California, Dry Creek Valley has a winning combination of ideal geography and climate. Fertile, well-drained soils create concentrated varietal character while long, warm days, bookended by cool nights, allow grapes to reach full phenolic ripeness and balance. The warm and welcoming appellation is home to a number of family-owned vineyards and wineries that place a strong emphasis on sustainable farming practices.

Zinfandel reigns supreme here and still produces in a great number of very old vineyards—often 100 years old or older. These old vines create a powerful, voluptuous and sultry wine unlike those of any other region. Sauvignon Blanc, the valley’s signature white grape, also performs exceptionally well. Many other varieties grow comfortably here, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Syrah. Petite Sirah is often found in blends with Zinfandel.
