Winemaker Notes

This wine is clear and bright in appearance with a lime and golden apple skin hue. On the nose, there is the aroma of green apples, gooseberries, and ripe pears. It is a medium-bodied wine with the fruit well integrated with the oak. Subtle vanilla and butterscotch along with lemon curd and quince can be found on the palate. It has well-balanced acidity and good length.

Pair with: mushroom risotto, pan seared scallops, catch of the day or with good company.

The 2014 Glen Carlou Chardonnay is spot-on in its presentation. The wine's dried peach skin aroma leads nicely into a palate of the same and joins it with a bit of chalkiness. Pair it with a grilled chicken salad. (Tasted: October 25, 2017, San Francisco, CA)

Glen Carlou Winery Image
Glen Carlou was established in 1985, and since 2003, Glen Carlou has been solely owned and operated by Hess Family Estates. Glen Carlou is located in the picturesque Paarl Valley in the Cape Winelands in South Africa. They enjoy a Mediterranean climate of warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters. An exciting variety of slopes and the riches of their soils create unique winegrowing conditions, while judicious vineyard practices ensure the cultivation of healthy flavorsome grapes reflecting the inherent characteristics of their terroir.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

Flanked by majestic mountains on either side, the Paarl district is a valley whose most valuable water source is the Berg River. While sometimes during dry and hot summers, the vineyards in the valley need supplemental irrigation, those vineyards on the eastern slopes where water retention is better, aren't irrigated.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc enjoy great success in Paarl.
