Winemaker Notes
The 2020 vintage of Gunderloch Jean-Baptiste Rheinhessen Riesling Kabinett is their 30th anniversary bottling! Always a pleasure and always great value for Riesling-lovers, the grapes for Jean-Baptiste are grown on the lower terraces of Gunderloch's three top vineyard sites: Nierstein Hipping, Nierstein Pettenthal and Nackenheim Rothenberg (all grand cru sites). Technically a feinherb style, or "balanced off-dry” at about 22-24g/l RS every year. This is a wine that is again and again a great way to introduce one to the joys of German Riesling.

This could be the ideal introduction to drier-style rieslings for skeptics, because it has so much charm and vitality. The balance of juicy grapefruit (pink and yellow) character with mineral acidity is instantly appealing. Long, clean finish. The 30th vintage of this wine!

Riesling possesses a remarkable ability to reflect the character of wherever it is grown while still maintaining its identity. A regal variety of incredible purity and precision, this versatile grape can be just as enjoyable dry or sweet, young or old, still or sparkling and can age longer than nearly any other white variety. Somm Secret—Given how difficult it is to discern the level of sweetness in a Riesling from the label, here are some clues to find the dry ones. First, look for the world “trocken.” (“Halbtrocken” or “feinherb” mean off-dry.) Also a higher abv usually indicates a drier Riesling.
