Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

This wine exhibits a perfume of intertwining notes of dried fig, black currant, black pepper, wet gravel, and dried thyme. Mouth-coating flavors of blackberry preserves, tobacco; cocoa nib and nutmeg develop on the palate along with a full spectrum of tannin in layers of powerful, chewy, and round texture that integrate into a long, polished finish.

Blend: 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc

As with the 2015, the base 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is a tremendous value. Blueberries, black cherries, licorice and hints of charcoal all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, ripe, opulent red that lacks the sheer grandeur and finesse of the top cuvee, yet packs gorgeous fruit and offers a peek at the quality coming from this estate. The blend is 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot, and 1% Cabernet Franc aged in 50% new French oak.

COMMENTARY: When I think of Napa Valley royalty, Hall comes right to mind. This property has flourished in making some of the valley's finest Cabernet Sauvignons—they make around a dozen different bottlings each year, including a bevy of single vineyard and a few reserve offerings. The 2014 vintage of their normal is a solid effort. TASTING NOTES. This wine is pure classic Napa Valley. Its beautiful aromas and flavors of ripe black fruit, cassis, and sweet oak would make a lovely pairing with a thick and juicy ribeye. (Tasted: August 30, 2018, San Francisco, CA)

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon (96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc) represents the least expensive wine in the Hall portfolio at $55. The color is a saturated purple, and the wine rich, chewy and unctuously textured, with ripe tannin and a round, juicy mouthfeel. For a generic Napa, it has plenty of upside to it and will actually benefit from several more years of bottle age and keep for 15-20 years.

Dark and rich, with explosive dark berry, mocha, licorice, cedar and crushed rock touches, tilting toward herbal underbrush notes on the finish but never losing focus on the fruit. Drink now through 2032.

Among the winery's larger offerings, this wine doesn't hold back on quality, offering tight-grained tannin expression around rounded flavors of plum compote, blackberry bramble, cedar and clove. Bright, focused acidity tempers the ripeness and underlying richness, making for a welcome drinking experience.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
