The 2017 Saint-Véran exhibits aromas of citrus oil, crisp green apple, almond paste and white flowers, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive palate, its charming core of fruit tempered by racy acids, and concluding with a mineral finish.

Intense, lean and savory, this lemon-, stone- and saline-flavored version is backed by searing acidity. The balance tips toward the tangy side. Fine length. Drink now through 2023.

Founded in 1999 by Dominique Lafon, Héritiers du Comte Lafon is his trailblazing, biodynamic Maconnais domaine. These world class Chardonnay display what this magical region is capable of producing. Historically, the Maconnais was known for industrially farmed, volume driven wines. Dominique was the first Cote d’Or producers to invest in the immense potential hidden in those rolling hills by buying higher altitude, old vine parcels with the intent of letting this beautiful terroir (perhaps the most picturesque wine region in the world) reach its full potential. He started by converting all of the vineyards to biodynamic farming – the Lafon way!

Early on, he strived to preserve the fruit and minerality of the region by using only larger, neutral wood for the aging of the wines. His belief and passion for the region has made Héritiers a towering beacon for fine wine in the previously overlooked Chardonnay mecca. In 2006, he appointed longtime apprentice Caroline Gon as head winemaker of the domaine. Under her tireless and inspired leadership, the gospel of quality Maconnais is spreading far and wide, with a clear and definitive voice.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

Occupying vineyards to the west and south of the village of Mâcon, the appellation of St-Véran interweaves with Pouilly-Fuissé, overlapping both the Mâconnais and Beaujolais. St-Véran includes a lot of what was once sold as Beaujolais Blanc. Grown on limestone, St-Véran whites' ageability and power fall somewhere in between the wines of Mâcon-Villages and Pouilly-Fuissé.

After subtle aromas of lemon, apricot, acacia and honeysuckle, on the palate a St-Véran (always made of Chardonnay) shows fresh focus and clarity while exhibiting roundness and harmonious balance. A great St-Véran will express notes of almond, hazelnut, cinnamon, butter or toast and sometimes an exotic twist of orange peel. Seafood risotto or pasta with mushrooms are perfect pairings.
