Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

A dark ruby red with purple hues and a translucent edge, all of which imply youth, intensity and promise. The bouquet is dense in dark berry fruits with hints of sweet, talcy and spicy French oak. Rich in classic Cabernet notes of sweet blackberry and blackcurrant, savoury dried herbs and softening cocoa and mocha, the palate’s opulence is shaped by a supple and fine tannin structure. This wine has a powerful presence, a sweet core and lasting flavors that with reveal and reward with time.

A stylish and polished top-tier cabernet that has convincingly concentrated fruit, neatly curated oak and well-groomed tannins. Rich dark berry fruit aromas abound here; there's cassis and dark cherry, blueberry too, plus plenty of cedary oak nicely judged against intense fruit. The palate has silky fine tannin appeal. There's a smooth ball of fleshy dark cherry and cassis-flavored cabernet fruit, concentrated and balanced. Best from 2020 and for a decade or more longer.

A blend of Mount Barker and Margaret River fruit, this is lavishly oaked, chocolaty and rich, as decadent a bottle of Cabernet you’ll find in Australia. Baking spices accent mocha and cassis in this full-bodied wine, which features a velvety texture and long finish.

Deep garnet colored, the 2012 Abercrombie Cabernet Sauvignon is still a little youthfully mute with notes of mulberries and baked blueberries plus nuances of Provence herbs, cigar boxes and sandalwood. Medium-bodied, the palate is tight and structured with firm, chewy tannins and a good backbone of racy acid supporting the muscular fruit, finishing with wood and spice hints. Rating:91(+) Points

Howard Park, Australia
Howard Park Winery Video

It may sound improbable, but it was a passion for the sea and for riding the wild surf of Western Australia’s remote Margaret River region that led Jeff Burch to discover his affinity for wine. Now serving as the proud owner of Howard Park wines, Jeff and his family aim to craft boutique wines with an uncompromising commitment to quality.

Howard Park is one of Western Australia’s pioneering family-owned wineries, specializing in the state’s premier grape-growing regions of Margaret River and the Great Southern. Encompassing a 30+ year history and overseen by two generations of the Burch family, Howard Park is a multi-regional endeavor which has included the selection, acquisition and development of four exceptional estate vineyards across both regions as well as a winery and Cellar Door in Margaret River.

Howard Park has a very simple mantra when it comes to the production of its wines - premium wine can only come from excellent fruit. Since its foundation Howard Park has held the belief that each variety is best suited to particular climates and soil types within the two premium wine regions of Western Australia, Margaret River and the Great Southern. Howard Park’s Margaret River vineyards (Allingham & Leston) and the winery carry certification from the Winemakers Federation of Australia’s EntWine initiative for environmentally conscious practices. Sustainability is at the very heart of their vineyard management and while not certified, they have carefully chosen organic and biodynamic principles from Australia and overseas, to best cater for each individual vineyard block and their nuances. Chemicals and pesticides are avoided in the Howard Park vineyards, the winemaking facilities are 100% water sufficient, using rainwater collected from the roof for both winery and irrigation needs. Vineyard pests are kept under control by roving guinea fowl and flocks of sheep serve as environmentally friendly weed management.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

Quite remote and unequalled in beauty, the wine regions of Westerm Australia promise endless physical and climatic diversity. From the coolest, seaside vineyards to the hottest inland zones, Western Australia is the source of some of the country’s most sought after wines.
