One of a pair of impressive Nuits premiers crus in Guillaume Tardy's range, again located on the Vosne side of the village. This comes from clay soils, as its name suggests, and there's a little bit of influence from the combe here, but it's still a smooth, supple Pinot with stylish oak, silky tannins and a refreshing tang on the finish.

Clear purple, I am not picking up much definition on the nose. Too backward at first but more emerges later. There is very significant weight on the palate, more black fruit than red, some blackberries, but not too lush with a thread of clean acidity bringing up the finish.

Jean Tardy, France
In 1966, Jean Tardy started working vines in Nuits-St-Georges, Vosne-Romanée and Clos Vougeot under a crop-sharing arrangement with Domaine Méo-Camuzet. From the 1980s, he started slowly but surely to build his estate, acquiring land in the likes of Chambolle-Musigny, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin over the next 30 years. Jean's son Guillaume took charge of the winemaking in 2001. He continues to work under the watchful eye of Jean, the two of them doing everything to ensure healthy fruit and excellent ripeness. That means short pruning, de-budding and strict green harvest to keep yields down. The winemaking is gentle in the extreme. The fruit is 100% destemmed and the whole berries given a seven-day cold soak to extract colour and flavour. Fermentation takes place with infrequent pigeage to keep the elegance and finesse of the fruit. The wines are gently pressed to barrel and matured on lees, receiving their first racking at final blending. With only five hectares all up, these traditional, precise and elegant wines are domain-bottled in tiny quantities.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

Cote de Nuits, Burgundy

Inhabiting the bottom end of the northern half of the Côte d’Or, Nuits-St-Georges is a busy, market-driven town and home to many of Burgundy’s negociants. It is also the largest town in the Côte d’Or after Beaune and contributes "nuits" to the name of Côte de Nuits (i.e., the northern half of the Côte d’Or).

The appellation itself is divided into two parts, where in the north it directly borders Vosne-Romanée, the southerly end is the commune of Prémeaux. There are no Grands Crus in this village, though it does have a large number of Premiers Crus.

The best Nuits-St-Georges Pinot Noir are layered with cherry, plum, underbrush and sandalwood. The fruit is sweet, the wine energetic, and the finish long and lush.
