Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Gamey and dark with herbal notes, baking spice and wild blueberry. Notes of crisp bacon, white pepper and bay leaf. Rosemary and pine needles. Smelling this wine is like taking a walk in Muir Woods. Makes one imagine graphite, lavender, creosote and lifted violet. Really rolls onto the palate with weight and expansive volume. Cooling and suave as it lightly dusts the palate with cocoa-fine tannins. Black ink on the palate. Finely crushed tannins that are so supportive of the fruit. Perfectly frames the delectable syrah density beautifully. So decadent and built for the long haul. On day two opened, this wine absolutely demands to be near the top of the pyramid of Sangres. A very special bottle.

Blend: 91% Syrah, 6% Petite Sirah, 3% Viognier

Lastly, the 2019 La Sangre De Jonata (91% Syrah, 6% Petite Sirah, and 3% Viognier) sports a similar dense purple hue as well as stunning blueberry and blackberry fruits intermixed with awesome graphite, ground pepper, liquid violet, and iron-like aromas and flavors. Stunningly pure, full-bodied, and concentrated, it has the more focused, structured style of this estate front and center as well as incredible purity and a finish that won't quit. This is brilliant all the way, and while it has some appeal today, it will benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and, I suspect, have two decades of overall longevity.

The 2019 La Sangre de Jonata is another stellar wine in this range. Bright, floral and full of energy, the 2019 is endowed with so much finesse and silkiness. There was a time not too long ago when La Sangre was forbidding in its youth. Thankfully, those days are long gone. The 2019 is all class. Give it a few years in the cellar first, though.

Aromas of forest berries with some subtle cloves. Fresh thyme and sage. Full to medium body. Very fine tannins. Crushed stone and herbs. Hints of spicy dark chocolate. Drink or hold.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”

Santa Ynez Valley Wine

Santa Barbara, California

Ranging from cool and foggy in the west to warm and dry in the east, the Santa Ynez Valley is a climatically diverse growing area. The most expansive AVA within the larger Santa Barbara County region, Santa Ynez is also home to a wide variety of soil types and geographical features. The appellation is further divided into four distinct sub-AVAs—Sta. Rita Hills, Ballard Canyon, Los Olivos District and Happy Canyon—each with its own defining characteristics.

A wide selection of grapes is planted here—more than sixty different varieties, and counting. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir dominate in the chilly west, while Zinfandel, Rhône blends, and Bordeaux blends rule the arid east. Syrah is successful at both ends of the valley, with a lean and peppery, Old-World sensibility closer to the coast and lush berry fruit further inland.
