Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Sankt Laurent is a fairly rare Austrian grape varietal. It originated as a volunteer clone from Pinot Noir plants Burgundian monks brought into the country centuries ago. JURIS is one of the top Austrian wine makers of this exquisite grape and their Selection 2007 is yet another good example of their craftsmanship.

The wine shows the typical cherry notes of a good St. Laurent, has a medium body, and pairs very well with many types of food, grilled fish and braised meats alike.

A bold fruity wine, with sweet cherry and fresh fig flavors. It is ripe, full in the mouth, very fruity. An easy wine, with no pretensions, just great drinkability. Screwcap.

Juris, Other Europe
The Juris winery is located in the town of Gols, a place where wine has been the primary source of livelihood for over 2,000 years. Gols is the largest wine producer in the Neusiedlersee wine district and it located half way between Vienna and Budapest in the warm pannonian climate with easily permeable soils of gravel, brown earth and sand. The Stiegelmar family has lived in Gols since 1571 and winemaking has always been a central occupation. The name Juris comes from the first name Georg that has belonged to many generations of Stiegelmar men.

A significant variety in Austria, St. Laurent successfully grows also in the Pfalz and Rheinhessen regions of Germany. As the progeny of both Pinot and Savagnin, St, Laurent creates a finished red with a great deal of finesse not unlike Pinot Noir—but with a deeper color and a touch more body. Somm Secret—St. Laurent is the most widely planted red variety in both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Appreciated for superior wines made from indigenous varieties, Austria should be on the radar of any curious wine drinker. A rather cool and dry wine growing region, this country produces wine that is quintessentially European in style: food-friendly with racy acidity, moderate alcohol and fresh fruit flavors.

Austria’s viticultural history is rich and vast, dating back to Celtic tribes with first written record of winemaking starting with the Romans. But the 20th century brought Austria a series of winemaking obstacles, namely the plunder of both world wars, as well as its own self-imposed quality breach. In the mid 1980s, after a handful of shameless vintners were found to have added diethylene glycol (a toxic substance) to their sweet wines to imitate the unctuous qualities imparted by botrytis, Austria’s credibility as a wine-producing country was compromised. While no one was harmed, the incident forced the country to rebound and recover stronger than ever. By the 1990s, Austria was back on the playing field with exports and today is prized globally for its quality standards and dedication to purity and excellence.

Grüner Veltliner, known for its racy acidity and herbal, peppery aromatics, is Austria's most important white variety, comprising nearly a third of Austrian plantings. Riesling in Austria is high in quality but not quantity, planted on less than 5% of the country’s vineyard land. Austrian Rieslings are almost always dry and are full of bright citrus flavors and good acidity. Red varietal wines include the tart and peppery Zweigelt, spicy and dense Blaufränkisch and juicy Saint Laurent. These red varieties are also sometimes blended.
