    Winemaker Notes

1999 season again saw the continuation of very dry conditions. A cool spring was followed by above average temperatures during summer and veraison. The very dry season was interrupted by rain in early march, however it was Coonawarra's good fortune that continued dry weather prevailed and contributed to high quality fruit. 1999 vintage might well be praised and recorded among the best for Coonawarra. Yields were slightly above average, the wines display good varietal flavours and good palate depth.

Color Deep crimson red with garnet. Nose A balanced, complex fruit and oak nose. Intense berry fruits and some dusty mulberry with earthy tones. Elegant oak showing cedar and faint smoke complement the fruit aromas. Palate Intense palate flavours of berries and plums with hints of mulberries combined with attractive cedary oak. Soft assertive, slightly chalky tannins and a fine acid balance. Vinification Matured in oak barrels, of which half were new. Our barrels, predominantly French oak, are sourced from forests near the centre of France, and a smaller proportion was American oak.

    Katnook Estate, Australia
Katnook Estate is one of the most esteemed domains in Australia's premier red wine district, Coonawarra. Its vineyards, planted in prime Terra Rossa soil, span 330 hectares in the heart of this comparatively small and remote region in the south east corner of South Australia. From here come red wines that have contributed to Coonawarra's international reputation and white wines with equally distinctive attributes.

Concentrated flavours, fine balance and integrity of regional and varietal character, are all hallmarks of the Katnook Estate range which includes a Chardonnay Brut, Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and most recently Shiraz. A very small quantity of dessert wine is also made when conditions are favourable.

While Australia is best known for big, supple and potent Shiraz, it is also a fine source of Cabernet Sauvignon. Cab in fact is Australia’s second most planted red varietal, and it is both bottled on its own and often used in blends. It’s grown in Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia. The latter is the home of Block 42 of the Penfolds Kalimna Vineyard, whose vines -- planted in 1886 -- are believed to be the oldest productive Cabernet vines in the world. Two of the most highly regarded sources of Australian Cabernet Sauvignon, though, are Coonawarra on South Australia’s Limestone Coast, and Margaret River in Western Australia, near Perth.

Coonawarra, famous for its rich red soil called terra rossa, has held Cabernet vines since the 1890’s. Though it can get quite warm during the growing season, it’s not far from the cool waters of the Southern Ocean, which tempers the climate and promotes balance in the grapes and resulting wines. These Cabs tend to be complex indeed, showing trademark dark fruit and firm tannins, along with notes of cigar box, cedar and – very often – mint and/or eucalyptus. Some producers to look for are Jim Barry, Yalumba, Berton Vineyards and Penley Estate.

Margaret River, on the other hand, stepped into wine production only in the 1960’s. It is situated on the lower western tip of the country, where the Southern and Indian Oceans meet. This coastal location creates an even more temperate, maritime-influenced climate that resembles that of Bordeaux. In good years these Australian Cabs show amazing balance between ripeness, tannins and acidity, along with lovely texture. Producers of note include Leeuwin Estate, Vasse Felix and Howard Park.
