    1999 season again saw the continuation of veyr dry conditions. A cool spring was followed by above average temperatures during summer and varaison. The very dry season was interrupted by rain in early March, however it was Coonawarra's good fortune that continued dry weather prevailed and contributed to high quality fruit. 1999 vintage might well be praised and recorded among the best for Coonawarra. Yields were slightly above average, the wines display good varietal flavours with nice ripeness and good palate depth.

    Attractive varietal characters of rich earth, some mushrooms and light spicy plum fruit. The nose is made more complex with sweet vanillin and oak matuaration aromas of light mocha and spicy cedar. A smooth rounded palate structure with earthy tones and subtle vanilla, mocha and spicy oak. Some ripe berry fruit adds to the middle palate flavour. Balanced acid and soft tannins enhance the lingering flavours on the finish.

    Katnook Estate is one of the most esteemed domains in Australia's premier red wine district, Coonawarra. Its vineyards, planted in prime Terra Rossa soil, span 330 hectares in the heart of this comparatively small and remote region in the south east corner of South Australia. From here come red wines that have contributed to Coonawarra's international reputation and white wines with equally distinctive attributes.

    Concentrated flavours, fine balance and integrity of regional and varietal character, are all hallmarks of the Katnook Estate range which includes a Chardonnay Brut, Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and most recently Shiraz. A very small quantity of dessert wine is also made when conditions are favourable.

    With generous fruit and supple tannins, Merlot is made in a range of styles from everyday-drinking to world-renowned and age-worthy. Merlot is the dominant variety in the wines from Bordeaux’s Right Bank regions of St. Emilion and Pomerol, where it is often blended with Cabernet Franc to spectacular result. Merlot also frequently shines on its own, particularly in California’s Napa Valley. Somm Secret—As much as Miles derided the variety in the 2004 film, Sideways, his prized 1961 Château Cheval Blanc is actually a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

Grenache and Mourvèdre are also popular, both on their own and alongside Shiraz in Rhône Blends. Chardonnay is common throughout the country and made in a wide range of styles. Sauvignon Blanc has recently surged in popularity to compete with New Zealand’s distinctive version and Semillon is often blended in Margaret River or shines on its own in the Hunter Valley. Riesling thrives in the cool-climate Clare and Eden Valleys. Sticky-sweet fortified wine Rutherglen is a beloved regional specialty of Victoria.
