    Winemaker Notes

Kennedy Point Vineyard makes a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc that captures the essence of the regional fruit. The grapes, grown in the hot, stony soils of the Wairau, produce a wine redolent of fresh cut wild flowers and a full palate of passion fruit, gooseberry and citrus.

    Kennedy Point Winery Image
Kennedy Point home Vineyard was established in organic_vineyard_aerial1996 by Neal Kunimura and Susan McCarthy with Bordeaux varietals and Syrah. From the beginning, the philosophy of the family owned vineyard has been to focus on producing the very best wines from the site matched with thorough attention in the Vineyard and wine production. The vineyard is planted on steep north facing slopes on clay soils and organic and biodynamic methods are used in the Vineyard.

Kennedy Point vineyards are hand-tended by the team led by vineyard manager Heike Sonnenschein to ensure that we get the best possible grapes for the wines. Today Kennedy Point has five vineyards on Waiheke Island. Oakura Bay was also planted in 1996 and has the same varietals as Kennedy Point, plus Malbec and Chardonnay. Whakarite Bay, planted in 1999, is predominantly Merlot. Jasa Vineyard, planted in 2001 is 100% Syrah Grapes. Whakanewha Bay is 100% Chardonnay.

The wine produced on this property reflects the organic vineyard certification essence of the land, and supports the winery's belief that great wine is grown in the vineyard. Organic viticulture aims to sustain and enhance the fertility and life- supporting ability of the soil by not using chemical fertilizers and sprays.

Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.

Part of the Wairarapa region in the southern end of the country’s North Island, Martinborough is a bucolic appellation full of artisan, lifestyle wine producers. Above all else, their goals are to tend vineyards for low yields and create wines of supreme quality. Pinot noir is the main grape variety here, occupying over half of the land under vine.

Comparing topography, climate and soils, the region is nearly identical to Marlborough except that it produces top quality reds on the regular.
