Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

A generously lifted nose, featuring black cherries, savoury meats, kitchen spices and subtle charry oak notes. Crafted in a style that will appease now or reward further cellaring, the palate offers a richly textured yet surprisingly cultivated mouthfeel. The dark fruits, cherries and spices carry over from the nose superbly and combine expressively with the quality French oak and natural wine tannins.

Professional Ratings

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2013 Shiraz Covenant offers an intense, crème de cassis, baked blueberries and black forest cake nose enhanced by tar and chargrill and black loam nuances. This big, full-bodied wine is densely packed and structured like a brick house with firm and chewy tannins, good acid freshness and a long, earthy finish. It needs time.

Not for the faint of heart. Dense and intense, with chewy tannins and plenty of Earl Grey tea notes to complement the wild blackberry core. The tannins become chewy on the finish but don't get in the way of the wine's focus. Drink now through 2030.
  • 91
Made in a savory, ageworthy style, the 2013 Covenant features aromas of tar, espresso and black olive. It adds intriguing red-berry notes on the full-bodied palate, along with dusty tannins that persist through the long finish. Drink 2018–2025.

Kilikanoon, Australia
Kilikanoon Golden Hillside Winery Image

Founded in 1997 by Kevin Mitchell, Kilikanoon is a boutique Clare Valley winery with an international reputation for producing regionally expressive, terroir-driven wines. The Kilikanoon property, featuring a circa 1860s stone cottage housing Kilikanoon tasting room, was originally settled by early English migrants who named it after an historic old mansion in Cornwall. On purchasing the property in the 1990s, Kevin Mitchell inherited 30 year old Shiraz, Cabernet, Grenache and Riesling vineyards, many of which were planted by his father, Mort, in the 1960s. Fifteen years on, with the addition of partners Nathan Waks, a principal cellist with the Sydney Symphony, and Bruce Baudinet, Managing Director of Oracle Estates, Kilikanoon is rated by US and Australian critics as one of the Clare Valley's outstanding wineries, producing bracingly intense and long-lived Rieslings, along with powerful, yet balanced, Shiraz, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon.
