Winemaker Notes

The Old Ghost represents the best Zinfandel that Klinker Brick produces each year. Brambleberry fruit aromas intermingled with anise, clove, and exotic spice, echo previous vintages. Smaller berries harvested from this vineyard block tend to offer more “skin to flesh", providing a greater level of smooth yet firm tannin and structure to this wine. Pair with your prime porter house or grilled lamb.

Can a wine be much richer than this? The 2014 Klinker Brick Old Ghost Old Vine Zinfandel weighs in at 15.9% alcohol. But, all is good as this wine exhibits remarkable balance and style. There is plenty of fruit and no heat on the palate or in the finish. Its black fruit and dusty earth pair it well with grilled beef and Stilton. (Tasted: July 20, 2017, San Francisco, CA)

While quite ripe and fruity, this wine is also dry, nicely tannic and firmly textured, so it will pair beautifully with rich proteins. Aged 18 months in oak, mostly French, it has concentrated dark fruit aromas, and a layered array of flavors that recalls blueberry, dark chocolate and blackberry syrup. Bright acidity keeps everything in balance.

Klinker Brick, California
Klinker Brick Winery Image

Nestled in the heart of Lodi’s most prestigious Mokelumne AVA, sit 750 acres of estate vineyards, many of which have been farmed consistently by the Felten family for 6 generations. The soils are comprised of deep granite sandy loam, giving wines of this region a distinctive minerality. Situated at the edge of the Sacramento Delta, Pacific breezes gust through the Mokelumne AVA, cooling grapes, and creating a Mediterranean climate ideally suited for growing varietals such as Zinfandel, Syrah and Albarino.

Deeply committed to preserving the family’s ancient vineyards, Steve Felten founded Klinker Brick Winery in 2000 and is succeeded by daughter Farrah in ownership. An extension of the family is head winemaker Joseph Smith. Originally form Belize, Joe fell in love with wine after working crush in California in the early nineties. He has had a hand in every vintage of Klinker Brick, masterfully highlighting subtle terroir nuances and taming the robust fruit flavors indicative of the region with acidity and balance.
