    Winemaker Notes

Clos Lapeyre is situated in the Jurançon region of south west France, between Pau and Biarritz and was founded in 1920 by Jean Larrieu. Initially run as a strawberry farm, the estate is now run by Jean's grandson, Jean-Bernard, who took over in 1985 and replanted the entire estate with vines. The 12 hectares of vines are cultivated strictly according to organic principles and face south towards the Pic-du-Midi, an aspect which provides a modicum of protection from strong winds and plenty of sunshine during the summer months. The Jurancon Sec is 100% Gros Manseng and is packed with green fruit aromas and flavors.

A delightful pale gold in color with green flecks. Scents of mandarin, grapefruit and green orchard fruits. On the palate, fresh, crisp and round with a refreshing acidity. Great with grilled sardines, oysters in a Bordelaise sauce or oven baked John Dory.

Jurancon winemaker Jean-Bernard Larrieu is the winemaker of the family-owned Clos Lapeyre. He lives just down the road from the domaine with his wife and two daughters, with whom he insists on speaking the local patois or dialect.

The winery has been in existence since the first World War, at which time the Larrieu family made more money from the sale of peaches and cows than wine. Later, in the 1960s, more emphasis was placed on grapes, which were sold to the coopérative. The bulk of the estate's money, however, came from strawberries grown on the property. Mp> In the early 1970s, the family were the first to replant their vines on terraces, something that has now become common in Jurançon. This beautiful system, in which vines are planted in a semicircle — like an amphitheater — guarantees better exposure to the sun, encouraging further ripeness of late-harvest crops.

Offering the perfect balance of quality and value, Southwest, France is a recognized appellation that encompasses all wine regions in France’s southwestern corner (except for Bordeaux and Cognac, which merit their very own). Two of the more famous subregions here are Cahors, known for its Malbec, and Madiran, home of the robust Tannat grape. Bordeaux Blends are also popular red wines of the Southwest; Petit Manseng is the regions’s star autochthonous white variety.
