    Winemaker Notes

The Laughinghouse Grenache is sourced directly from a wonderful (and wonderfully large) vineyard near the Santa Lucia AVA, overlooking the Salinas River Valley. Just a bit cooler and just a bit longer hang time allows for a greater complexity to develop in these Grenache grapes. The wine is handpicked and hand sorted before heading to the very simple tank fermentation. That is, no oak was harmed in the production of this wine. The natural, crackling delicious and mouth-filling flavor is all red fruits - strawberry, rhubarb, raspberry, plums and cherries, with a slight mineral streak running from end to end. This blend has a tiny (3.6%) amount of white grapes (Roussanne and Grenache Blanc) which contribute to the delicacy and the aromatic complexity of the wine.

The wonderful thing about Grenache is that when it's bottled fresh like this it is a spectacular wine to chill slightly and accompany your grilled foods. At room temperature it is elegant and spicy enough for a roast chicken at a dinner party - but then it's so lip-smackingly fresh and zingy, you'll want another bottle. The finish is especially broad and long too, with a touch of quinine and snappy berries.

Laughinghouse Vintners offers unique California wines, expressing a sense of place - just a little off center. At first the founders decided to find a great vineyard that would make a unique Petite Sirah. They happen to love this grape, and thought to make one that was just a bit different. The robust and powerful aspects of Petite Sirah shouldn't necessarily come from ripeness levels or excessive alcohols. They wanted minerality and complexity; and the volcanic red, and granitic soils of Calaveras County provide those amazing qualities. They intend to continue their exploration of Petite Sirah vineyards all over California, but Tanner Vineyard in Vallecito will be their first stop.

Claire Silver is a long time wine industry professional based in Santa Rosa. After working many years in the trade, especially in New York and New Jersey, she and her family moved to California in 2013. Claire works as a negociant in the most traditional sense, in that she buys barrels of unfinished wines and completes them, fixing the blends and the balance, then bottling. The object is to produce a very fine wine at a fair price.

Grenache thrives in any warm, Mediterranean climate where ample sunlight allows its clusters to achieve full phenolic ripeness. While Grenache's birthplace is Spain (there called Garnacha), today it is more recognized as the key player in the red blends of the Southern Rhône, namely Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes du Rhône and its villages. Somm Secret—The Italian island of Sardinia produces bold, rustic, single varietal Grenache (there called Cannonau). California, Washington and Australia have achieved found success with Grenache, both flying solo and in blends.

A geographic and climatic paradise for grape vines, Monterey is a part of the greater Central Coast AVA and contains within it five smaller sub-appellations, including Arroyo Seco, San Lucas, San Bernabe, Hames Valley and the famous Santa Lucia Highlands. The climate is relatively warm but tempered by cool, coastal winds, allowing the regions in Monterey County an exceptionally long growing season. Bud break often happens two weeks sooner and harvest tends to be two weeks later compared to other surrounding regions.

Monterey’s coastal side, where the cooling ocean fog allows grapes to develop a perfect sugar-acid balance, excels in the production of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling. Warmer, inland subzones are home to fleshy, concentrated and full-bodied reds like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zinfandel.

Chardonnay, covering about 40% of vineyard acreage, is the most widely planted grape in all of Monterey County.
