Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Extremely saturated, glowing, shimmering purple-black robe. The nose has fresh blackberry and black plums, road tar, blueberry jam, dark chocolate, black pepper and spice notes. In the mouth, a burst of fresh acidity similar to black currants, blackberries and cherries emerges first, then loads of smooth, black cherry, bittersweet chocolate, tobacco, blackberry liqueur, crème de cassis, and a powerful vein of minerals; wet stones, creek-bed, sea salt, white chalk, oyster shell. There’s a small whiff of herb like tarragon and anise. The finish is lip-smacking and crisp, with well integrated tannins and forward acidity.

One of the most food-friendly Petite Sirah you’re going to come across, and easily drinkable and enjoyable in its youth. The striking minerality and bright acid makes this an awesome accompaniment to most grilled meats, grilled vegetables, and one of the rare Petite Sirah you find to match a nice salmon with herbs, salt and pepper. It is impossible not to finish your glass!

Surprisingly soft for this grape variety, the 2014 Laughinghouse Petite Sirah offers a gentle touch for the palate. The wine's smoothness makes it a delicious matching with barbecued pork ribs. Drinks well now. (Tasted: July 28, 2016, San Francisco, CA)

Laughinghouse Vintners offers unique California wines, expressing a sense of place - just a little off center. At first the founders decided to find a great vineyard that would make a unique Petite Sirah. They happen to love this grape, and thought to make one that was just a bit different. The robust and powerful aspects of Petite Sirah shouldn't necessarily come from ripeness levels or excessive alcohols. They wanted minerality and complexity; and the volcanic red, and granitic soils of Calaveras County provide those amazing qualities. They intend to continue their exploration of Petite Sirah vineyards all over California, but Tanner Vineyard in Vallecito will be their first stop.

Claire Silver is a long time wine industry professional based in Santa Rosa. After working many years in the trade, especially in New York and New Jersey, she and her family moved to California in 2013. Claire works as a negociant in the most traditional sense, in that she buys barrels of unfinished wines and completes them, fixing the blends and the balance, then bottling. The object is to produce a very fine wine at a fair price.
