Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Elegant, subtle nose, unveiling the fragrance of white fruits with fine citrus notes. An outburst on the palate, lavish and intense. Crisp and tasty fruit unveil balance, freshness and a fine touch of grapefruit that that lingers on the mouth. It clearly represents the elegance and complexity we are looking for.

Cristina Forner at Cáceres has been branching out from Rioja, and this may be one of her most successful new wines. In 2014, she invested in 300 acres of vines on terraces above the Duero River; the vines, mostly verdejo and mostly on gravelly sand, surround the winery built at the vineyard. Eso es Rueda, I wrote, when I tasted this wine. Its dynamic contrast of rich and fresh, its brisk flavors of apples and turmeric, its leesy depths and lasting refreshment all set the bar for affordable pleasure in verdejo. Chill it for shellfish, particularly grilled oysters with spicy garlic butter.

Fermentation on the lees with no barrel aging brings out aromas of peach, pine nut, and lemon sorbet. Stark acidity creates liveliness on the palate around a mineral core. Vibrant notes of lemon chiffon, meringue, and honeyed pineapple demonstrate an inner freshness.

Marques de Caceres The Winery Winery Image

In 1970, Enrique Forner founded Marqués de Cáceres Unión Vitivinícola S.A., a historic alliance of growers in the village of Cenicero in the Rioja Alta subregion of Rioja. The enterprising Forner family has been devoted to the wine trade for five generations. Their search for the best vine growers and vineyards in Rioja and the introduction of a Bordeaux concept revolutionized the production and business model of the region. They work with one single objective: producing the highest quality wines. Today this obsession continues to be the leitmotif of Cristina Forner, the fifth generation of this distinguished wine family.

Captivating and full of character, Verdejo grows with great success in Rueda, Spain and virtually nowhere else in Europe. It has become so trendy in Spain since the turn of the century that plantings have also increased tremendously. Somm Secret—Contrary to what some may think, it is actually not related to the Portugese variety with a very similar name, Verdelho. In fact, DNA profiling suggests it may be a sibling of Godello, another native of NW Spain.

Rueda is located along the banks of the Duero River in Spain’s Castilla y León region, just a 2-hour drive north of Madrid. While winemaking in this area goes back to the 12th century, it was in the 1980s that the region was granted Denominación de Origen (D.O.) status. Today, more than 70 wineries call Rueda home. This national favorite is the top-selling white wine in Spain.

Notable facts Rueda’s main grape variety, Verdejo, gets it distinct complexity from stressful growing conditions and mineral-rich soil. Think of Verdejo as a fuller-bodied and more aromatic Sauvignon Blanc. A lush and smooth character with perfectly balanced acidity means Rueda wines pair well with seafood, fresh salads and spicy food, but are also great on their own.
