Winemaker Notes

Number 64 on the Wine.com 100 of 2007!

This 2005 Shiraz shows generous and concentrated fruit with its flavors of dense dark chocolate, licorice, and spice. 100% barrel fermented in new and 1 year old American oak and barrel matured for 12 months. It has silky, smooth tannins and shows creamy developed characters and is overwhelmingly, mouthfillingly delicious.

"Cut from the same mold as the Sarah's Blend, the inky/blue/purple-colored 2005 Shiraz offers up sweet, rich aromas of blackberries, toasty wood, licorice, and a touch of pepper. This dense, opulent, fleshy, full, rich, mouthfilling, concentrated Shiraz should drink well for 3-4 years.""- The Wine Advocate"

Marquis Phillips, Australia
Marquis Philips is a collaboration between American Dan Philips and Australian winemakers to make the most delicious, power-packed wines on the planet. Marquis Philips began with a simple goal: to control the entire winemaking process, soup to nuts, from concept to vineyard, to market, to wine style, to price. The winemakers aim to create wines that are pleasure-giving, dark, ripe, sweet, gulpable, loud, yet subtle, sweet and gentle with a long finish, elegant, Turley-esque, and powerful.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”

South Australia

View all products

Known for opulent red wines with intense power and concentration, McLaren Vale is home to perhaps the most “classic” style of Australian Shiraz. Vinified on its own or in Rhône Blends, these hot-climate wines are deeply colored and high in extract with signature hints of dark chocolate and licorice. Cabernet Sauvignon is also produced in a similar style.

Whites, often made from Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc tend to be opulent and full of tropical, stone and citrus fruit.
