Winemaker Notes

The year was 1899 when Giuseppe and Luisa Martinelli planted three acres of Zinfandel in the little town of Forestville nestled in the Russian River Valley. The special site they chose was a very steep slope of 60-degrees with a southeastern exposure. Nearly one century later Giuseppe and Luisa's grandson, Lee Martinelli Sr., followed in their footsteps by planting a Zinfandel vineyard.

Professional Ratings

There are 756 cases of the 2003 Zinfandel Giuseppe & Luisa, which, believe it or not, tops the scales at 17.4%. At this point, some heat and the high alcohol does become noticeable on the palate. There are plenty of sweet currants and loads of pepper, but the raisiny fruit needs to calm down. Roasted meats and a liqueur of mincemeat and spice box are part of this package, and the wine is impressive, full-bodied, but obviously controversial. It possesses an evolved, medium ruby/garnet color. This one I would opt for drinking over the next 3-4 years, but certainly that high alcohol is going to keep it stable.

Martinelli Winery & Vineyards Lee Martinelli Sr., Owner & Farmer Winery Image

The Martinelli Family has been growing grapes and making wine in the Russian River Valley since the late 1880s. As 6th generation stewards of some of the finest vineyards in the region, they're proud to continue this legacy of hands-on farming, bringing decades of experience to everything they do.

Their primary goal has always been hand-crafting quality wines that are born in their estate vineyards. All of their grapes are Estate grown, allowing them to use only their favorite blocks for each vineyard designated wine. They have a commitment to quality and have never offered for sale a wine that they felt did not live up to the reputation and expectations of its label. They also try to maintain a sense of consistency with each vintage, while still allowing the true nature of the vineyard to shine through. These wines are limited production and each vineyard is hand farmed very carefully, producing only the finest quality fruit.
