Winemaker Notes

Jackass Vineyard was planted in the late 1800's in the splendid Russian River Valley. This eight acre vineyard thrives on a steep rolling hillside which surrounds the west side of the Jackass Hill Vineyard. The old head pruned vines are farmed much the same way as they were a century ago; without the use of trellising, irrigation, or pesticides. The vines produce a large crop load for being 100 years old, about three tons per acre, and the fruit is thinned to insure more concentrated flavor in the berries.

The 2003 Zinfandel Jackass Hill Vineyard (139 cases tipping the scales at a whopping 16.9%) is, of course, pure exoticism. This full-bodied, luscious Zinfandel exudes notes of Provencal herbs, freshly ground pepper, espresso roast, overripe figs, sassafras, coffee, jammy strawberry and blackberry fruits backed up by an unctuous texture, and a totally dry, huge, monster finish with oodles of fruit and glycerin. It is an amazing wine and a provocative example of the heights Zinfandel can reach but so rarely does.

Martinelli Winery & Vineyards Lee Martinelli Sr., Owner & Farmer Winery Image

The Martinelli Family has been growing grapes and making wine in the Russian River Valley since the late 1880s. As 6th generation stewards of some of the finest vineyards in the region, they're proud to continue this legacy of hands-on farming, bringing decades of experience to everything they do.

Their primary goal has always been hand-crafting quality wines that are born in their estate vineyards. All of their grapes are Estate grown, allowing them to use only their favorite blocks for each vineyard designated wine. They have a commitment to quality and have never offered for sale a wine that they felt did not live up to the reputation and expectations of its label. They also try to maintain a sense of consistency with each vintage, while still allowing the true nature of the vineyard to shine through. These wines are limited production and each vineyard is hand farmed very carefully, producing only the finest quality fruit.
