Winemaker Notes

This is the 10th edition of this wine and we’re extremely proud of every one. One of the main points is how differently each vintage shows today. The greatness of the vineyard shines through every year, while individual attributes of each vintage are apparent in the respective bottlings. Given the low natural pH of the site, every edition has been highly aromatic upon release. That said, the 2014 might actually be the most aromatic to date. Notes of violets, red/black fruits, pain grille, smoke and truffle dominate. The acidity also makes for a mouthwatering experience, leading to the desire for another sip. The wine rests lightly on the palate, coating without tiring the taste buds. Even darker than the Amoenus, Materium possesses a saturated-to-the-rim opacity.

Professional Ratings

The flagship, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Materium, represents 560 cases and achieved 14.8% alcohol after aging in 90% new Taransaud and Darnajou casks. Remarkably, the wine matches the perfect 2013, with extraordinary fragrance of blueberry, blackberry, forest floor, truffle, spring flowers and background barbecue smoke followed by a thick, unctuously textured, juicy, but incredibly well-balanced, intense wine. This is built like a skyscraper with enormous quantities of blueberry, blackberry and cassis fruit, well-integrated acidity and sweet, gentle tannins. This is an extraordinary effort from Maybach that can be drunk now or cellared for up to 30 or more years.

Like the 2013, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Materium is another perfect wine. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 90% new barrels, it offers an extraordinary bouquet of blueberries and cassis fruit that’s supported by layers of white chocolate, white flowers, toasty oak, and liquid violets. With a deep, saturated purple color, full-bodied richness, incredible elegance and purity, and masses of ripe tannin that are almost hidden by fruit at this early stage, it’s a heavenly, powerful yet graceful 2014 to drink over the coming 2-3 decades.

From humble beginnings as a trainee in a German orphanage, Wilhelm Maybach came to invent the high-speed internal combustion engine which led to his creation of the first motorcycle. In 1901, as chief engineer and business partner to Gottlieb Daimler, he designed and built the first Mercedes cars. In later years, Wilhelm's son, Karl Maybach, developed the first high-speed diesel engine and constructed motors for the Zeppelin airships that circled the globe in the 1920's and 30's.

In 2002, Daimler AG revitalized the Maybach brand in recognition of the father and son who together played such a monumental role in defining German engineering.

100 years later, the name Maybach remains synonymous with quality at the finest level. The tradition of individuality and craftsmanship established by the Maybach ancestors, the winery continues to honor with with its hand-made wines.
