Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

McEvoy Ranch's 2011 Red Piano is savory and tart on the palate with dusty minerality, complex earthiness and a persistent finish. Deep ruby in hue with a fuschia rim, this wine has aromas of Satsuma plum, dark forest fruits and green peppercorn, with notes of anise, black tea and green tobacco. Toast and oak spice notes on the finish pair readily with an array of bold flavors.

Blend of Syrah, Grenache, Montepulciano, Alicante Bouschet, Viognier and Refosco.

Professional Ratings

While labeled under the broad North Coast appellation, this is actually a single-vineyard wine, a blend of syrah (60 percent), grenache, montepulciano, alicante bouschet, refosco and viognier grown among the olive trees at Nan and Nion McEvoy’s Marin County ranch. If feels like a classic coastal syrah, its explosive aromas of violet and green peppercorn carried in a zesty yet ethereal line of flavor, content to be seamless and delicious rather than grand. There’s a sanguine tartness to the acidity that begs for food—anything from braised rabbit to merguez.

McEvoy Ranch, California
A pioneer in estate-grown, organic olive oil, Nan McEvoy was a trailblazer and a tireless promoter of the farm fresh food movement in the Bay Area. A combination of infectious passion and unwavering determination, plus the encouragement of her son, Nion, led to the planting of 25 acres of Pinot Noir and a diverse selection of Mediterranean varietals on the wind-swept slopes of McEvoy Ranch outside of Petaluma. Initially, the vines were inter-planted among the olive trees for wind/sun protection. Each wine is meticulously grown and made on the estate, with the purpose to accompany great food, spirited conversation and longtime friends.

California is a winemaking colossus; by itself it is the fourth largest producer in the world. Red wine accounts for 56% of the total by volume, and red grapes 63% of total acres planted. In addition, a number of California red wines are heralded as being among the most prestigious and sought-after wines in the world.

While the state’s incredibly diverse geography, soils and microclimates allow for a wide array of styles, the key factor unifying California red wine is the abundance of sunshine and a long, consistent growing season. This leads to well-developed fruit marked both by impressive ripeness and balancing acidity.

The state’s most famous red wine region, of course, is Napa Valley, where Cabernet Sauvignon reigns as king. But California boasts a wealth of other impressive appellations. The much larger and climatically varied Sonoma County also produces world class California Cabernet, along with wonderful examples of California Pinot Noir and Zinfandel.

Fine versions of Cabernet and Zinfandel hail from Paso Robles as well, which is also gaining fame with Rhone varietals like Syrah and Grenache. As for Pinot Noir, terrific examples can be found from AVA’s such as Anderson Valley, Carneros, Santa Lucia Highlands and Sta. Rita Hills. Wineries in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties are making wonderful Syrahs, and the Sierra Foothill appellations are proving to be an experimental hotbed, with Italian and Spanish varietals employed to great effect.

This of course is a mere sketch. The subject of California red wine is as deep and broad as an ocean, and absolutely a joy to explore!
