    Winemaker Notes

This wine opens with beautiful and intense aromatics. A blast of chocolate, tobacco, black cherry liqueur, and intense minerality that is reflective of Medlock Ames estate. The acid and round tannins are in good balance and give a full, lush mouthfeel. This Cabernet Sauvignon has a rollercoaster of flavors that switch from savory to spice with fruit intermixed. Flavor hits abound with deep, dark blueberry, cocoa, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, coconut, cinnamon toast, mocha, cherry cola, and roasted meat in the background. Vintage 2012 was more about plum and red fruit. Vintage 2013 is more dark fruit, a “brambliness” that we like. The small percentage of Petit Verdot provides the accent notes to the solid Cabernet core, while the Merlot lends additional structure. The long finish supports the fruit surrounded by oak with a hint of fresh herbs. The tannins are in perfect harmony with the wine’s structure. It is tasting well now and can be enjoyed for the next three to five years.

Medlock Ames is an estate fine wine producer located in Alexander Valley, Sonoma County, California. Started in 1998 by friends Chris James and Ames Morison, their commitment to quality through mindful and organic farming is considered to be one of their greatest assets. Their vineyards are farmed organically with no insecticides, chemical fertilizers or herbicides and solar power provides the energy needed to run. Only 55 of 338 acres are farmed, they chose to leave the majority of land in a natural state - reserving the majority of the acreage for oaks and wildflowers, not vines. Innovative and traditional methods are used to farm this boutique vineyard where vegetables, olives and wildlife also flourish. The portfolio includes Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Reserve Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, a Red Bordeaux Blend, estate bottled olive oil, verjus and preserves.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

Nearly a northern extension of Napa Valley, Alexander Valley starts just north of the small, Knights Valley, and is just a few minutes drive from the Napa town of Calistoga. It is Sonoma County’s hottest AVA. But the Russian River, which runs through the valley, creates cooler pockets and its soft, alluvial soil is ideal for grape growing, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. In fact, some believe that Alexander Valley Cabernets truly rival the best from Napa Valley and many of the heavy-hitter producers have largely invested here.

In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up over 50% of plantings, Merlot and old vine Zinfandel thrive here. Ample, fleshy Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc dominate white wine production. Some old-vine plantings of Grenache have also been discovered and more recent experiments with Sangiovese and Barbera show great promise.
