Winemaker Notes

The 2016 Michael Pozzan Oakville Zinfandel glows a deep ruby red in the glass. The nose is powerful, with explosive aromas of bright ripe raspberry, yellow peach, candied cherries, and a touch of sweet summer hay. The mouth is dramatically expressive, with volatile flavors of peach, boysenberry, cantaloupe, and milk chocolate, all balanced by a frame of sweet French oak - vanilla, cinnamon, and clove. The wine’s lengthy finish is pure Tahitian vanilla bean.

Enjoy this extroverted Zinfandel with your best carnitas tacos.

Michael Pozzan’s grandfather grew up in Piedmont, later moving to Sonoma County, where he planted zinfandel on Pozzan Road in Healdsburg. That may help explain the Italianate style of this zinfandel, an intriguing, old-fashioned wine that harks back to earlier days in Napa Valley, when prune orchards and zinfandel vines were farmed by Italian families. This zin’s flavors blend tart cherries and oregano, along with a smoky, peppery spice. Pour it with a sausage-andmushroom pizza. Best Buy

The pleasure of good wine is not just about balanced flavors, a fragrant nose, or lush colors. It’s also about the moment when that first sip is taken, with family or friends, over favorite foods or during special occasions.

Michael Pozzan creates wines for moments like those, wines that capture the best of the varietals he blends, vintage after vintage. His long-time experience with growers from premier Napa and Sonoma vineyards allows him to seek out and then hand-select exceptional fruit each growing season. Michael then works closely with winemaker Richard Bruno to craft those grapes into stylish wines you can enjoy every day, or serve with great pride at those events in your life that deserve something special. These are wines of high quality and exceptional value — wines you’ll want to share with those you love, and with those who love wine. Michael Pozzan Winery currently produces 125,000 cases per year and distributes wine under four labels — Michael Pozzan, Annabella, Dante and Marianna — in select markets throughout the United States.

Unapologetically bold, spice-driven and jammy, Zinfandel has secured its title as the darling of California vintners by adapting well to the state's diverse microclimates and landscapes. Born in Croatia, it later made its way to southern Italy where it was named Primitivo. Fortunately, the imperial nursery of Vienna catalogued specimens of the vine, and it later made its way to New England in 1829. Parading the true American spirit, Zinfandel found a new home in California during the Gold Rush of 1849. Somm Secret—California's ancient vines of Zinfandel are those that survived the neglect of Prohibition; today these vines produce the most concentrated, ethereal and complex examples.

Home to some of the most sought-after Cabernet Sauvignon in America, Napa Valley’s Oakville district stretches across the center of Napa's valley floor and foothills between the Vaca and Mayacamas Mountains. This AVA is home to the legendary To Kalon Vineyard and Martha's Vineyard, as well as many powerhouse wineries including Screaming Eagle, Silver Oak, Robert Mondavi, Opus One, Far Niente and Groth.

The climate is generally warm and agreeable, resulting in year after year of favorable vintages. Summer days see a gentle tug of war between warmer inland air and the cool air coming in from the San Pablo Bay, creating an ideal environment to grow red varieties. Oakville's diverse soils, namely ancient sea bedrock, clay and gravel, are well-drained, and perfect for high-caliber viticulture.

Cabernet here is often bottled varietally but is also popular in Bordeaux Blends. Oakville wines are known for their silky, sensual textures, structured tannins, dark and brooding fruit and lovely aromatics. These age-worthy and prestigious wines are favored by collectors throughout the world.
